This is according to a release from the Government Information Service (GIS), which noted that the schools will debate the moot, “Blacklisting Caribbean financial centres is a modern form of colonialism” along with an impromptu speech presentation at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School Courtyard on Wednesday, March 11 at 6:00 p.m.

The Cedar International School, Claudia Creque Educational Centre, Elmore Stoutt High School and Bregado Flax Educational Centre advanced to the semifinals and went head to head on February 19.

Co-Curricular Education Officer, Mrs Heida Selwood said, “Cedar International School and Claudia Creque Educational Centre debated the moot ‘The Government’s proposal to tax monies leaving the country is justifiable’; and Elmore Stoutt High School and Bregado Flax Educational Centre debated the moot ‘Providing free tertiary education is an unnecessary burden for the Virgin Islands’ Government’.”

The Elmore Stoutt High School won against the Bregado Flax Educational Centre with 655 points and Cedar International School won against Claudia Creque Educational Centre with 581 points to advance to the finals.

The debate finals will be Live on Facebook: @BVIGovernment. The preliminaries and semi-finals can also be viewed on the Government’s Facebook page.

Residents are encouraged to support the students, as they debate current issues existing in the Virgin Islands community.
