Elinah aiming to swim as ‘hard & fast’ as she can @ Rio Olympics
Phillip, 16, who is representing the Virgin Islands at the Games through a Universality Invitation, will compete in the 50M Freestyle Heats, with the semi-finals to take place the same day.
In an interview with the BBC today, August 10, 2016, Phillip was asked what were her goals for Friday.
“Definitely to swim as fast and as hard as I can, not give up, just keep pushing through no matter how hard it gets.”
The final for her event will take place on August 13, 2016.
Phillip, who is the first swimmer and youngest ever athlete to represent the Virgin Islands at the Olympic Games, made it known that ‘Golden Boy’, American Michael Phelps is her idol in swimming but the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, are the ones that really inspire her.
“They work incredibly hard and fight for what they want and I know they never give up so that is truly inspiring to me.”
Phillip, who lives and trains in England, has been swimming competitively since the age of 10 and set her eyes on Rio at just 12 years old back in 2012.
She competed at the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

I hope that other youths will be inspired to emulate you. Good luck!
I trust that the organizers of the KATS and other swim programs will now encourage ALL youths of ethnic background to push forward for other Olympic games.
saw this coming from the very first time we attended our
very first OECS meet 2009 in ST Lucia. I have all the confident
that you will continue to make us proud Elinah, Gods speed.
