EAST END, Tortola, VI – Even though there have been calls by some for a cut back in the number of international artists for Emancipation Festival in order to save money and to allow more local artists to get in the spotlight, this is not the case for this year's celebrations at least as a number of international performers have been listed for the 2016 celebrations.

The Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee (VIF&FC) has already reported that a number of international artists, including, Sizzla Kalonji, Bunji Garlin, Destra Garcia and Beenie Man, will be performing at the Road Town Festival.

Emancipation Festival 2016 celebrations for the Eastern end of Tortola of the Virgin Islands, scheduled for August 2-3, 2016, is said to be going heavy on its list of international artistes too and, based on feedback from community members, they are loving it.

“We are very pleased with the lineup they have this year for our community, its top heavy but it’s what we want,” one resident told this news site.

Artists listed

According to the flyer that is being circulating for the festival celebrations at East End/Long Look, among those expected to blaze the stage are I-Octane, Nikki Brooks, Hypa 4000, Militant and Jah Vinci.

Other performers listed are Voice, Cool Breeze Band, Venomous Band, BDJ, Bugz Bugs, Bad Boyz Sounds and OMG Band. The Last Lap is expected to feature Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights, Razor Blades, Showtime Band and Stylee Band.

Last week when the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee (VIF&FC) released the list of artists for the Rita Francis Festiville in Road Town, a cross-section of persons criticised the selection of controversial Jamaican artiste Miguel Orlando Collins, aka ‘Sizzla Kalongi’, describing him as controversial for his known position on gays.

Andrew A. Turnbull is East End/Long Look Honouree

The 2016 East End Festival will be in honour of Mr Andrew A. Turnbull, who is undoubtedly a very popular figure in the East End/Long Look community and moreso the wider VI. He is said to be a very active person in community, especially when it comes to keeping local entertainment alive.

He is ‘The’ man that has been keeping the traditional Moko Jumbies dancers high on their stilts. “Where ever you see the Moko Jumbies you see the works, dedication and sacrifice of Charile,” said one resident.

Andrew A. 'Charlie' Turnbull, an employee of the Water and Sewerage Department, is the master of the Elite Sky Dancers. He was honoured at last year’s festival opening ceremony and was the Parade Marshall then.
