EAST END/LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI – Members of the Hispanic community have alleged that the National Democratic Party (NDP) tried to give them money in exchange for their votes at the elections of June 8, 2015.

This news site visited members of the Vinzen family in East End, Tortola who were bold enough to make the allegation on record.

Throughout the brief election campaign, the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) has been making the accusation that persons from the NDP have been visiting various communities distributing 'white envelopes' to people with the hope that such persosn would vote for them.

Pointing to his elder relative, a young man translating into English what his elder relative said told this news site that persons from “the red party” came and offered him money. But he said that he did not take it as he did not support that party because they did nothing in almost four years.

“He say that he want change to see what could happen,” said the young man as he translated for his relative.

Pointing to his aunt, the young man said, “She was saying that they come to her business with money in an envelope and she started arguing with them and they was saying like she was not good. She told them she wanted change. She said it was disrespectful to her for them to come to the business.”

Concerns regarding Labour and Immigration

According to the members of the family, they are concerned that it costs too much for renewal of work permit and other immigration and labour related services.

They said too that the time allowed in the country is too brief. Further, they said that there is a need for more bilingual people working in the Labour Department and at the Immigration Department as they are given a hard time when there is a language barrier to deal with.

According to the persons, they have put these and other questions to members of the NDP during rallies and other occasions and they have not received any response.

“The NDP is blocking everything for outside people. We is nothing to NDP,” one of the persons said. “The VIP always have an answer for the poor people…the NDP always too high so you couldn’t reach to them,” she said.

Not true says Premier Smith

Contacted for a comment, Premier Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith refuted the allegations that the NDP tried to buy votes.

"As far as I know nobody in the party has offered money to anybody. There is no indication that anybody in the National Democratic Party has offered money to anybody to vote for them," he said, adding that it was the first time he was hearing of the allegations.

So how come only now they coming forward? Well if they re in the 8th, Penn certainly did not have to pay anyone to vote for him. His record spoke for himself. As a matter of fact, none of the NDP had to pay anyone..that is the VIP style.

If you believe that these Spanish people were offered money and turned it down because they wanted to vote VIP, then you just as stupid. This is hilarious!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA! Spanish people turned down envelopes of money because it's not right HAHA. This is not a hit against spanish people, because I know many of them and they are nice people. But for me to think that a hurting family will turn down money because they love the VIP over NDP, thats nonsense.

Firstly, looking at these Hispanic people they don’t even look like they can vote, much less to say they have belongers status. How can the NDP offer them white envelopes to vote? Secondly, Dr. Pickering is a veteran politician his votes are sure. Hon. Marlon Penn his votes are sure as well. Frankly I do not believe these people; VIP supporters put them up to this. If they continue with these attacks against the NDP, they will leave us with no choice, but to give NDP four more years come next election.

Exactly!!! None of the races in the East were tight so why would anybody offer them money? Marlon won by about 800 and Kedrick won by over 500 and this was no surprise. Why would NDP have to pay anybody in the East for votes? Further, they look like they could well use the damn money so this makes absolutely no sense.

@ Lol: does that make sense? Giving money to get vote makes no sense (VIP or NDP) since if its taken, it doesn't guarantee they vote for you. Notice that some people don't put one thing on their ballots. Only those who are desperate to win would resort to such. NDP has strong support and their record speaks for them, individually and as a team. End of story. Election is over. The people have spoken, but most of all God sets up leaders and he takes them down. That's the Word of Jehovah God (I am not a Jehovah ...).

Why do you think their votes are sure? Is it because they are doing so much for the community or is it because they always hand out money (to the poor) and as others say, many will not refuse. But in my opinion this 'help' for the poor in this manner basically keeps the poor dependent on the representative so yes their VOTES ARE SURE.

Check VG voters and you will hear how many 'big' sums were passed out up there. It is soooo sad when all this happens. As a matter of fact I heard lots of monies were passed out in all the districts . But the truth is- God is still on the throne and all unjust deeds will not go unpaid. We know that NDP would want us to forget this, but the people cannot. It was much too obvious, and the folks are talking it. Cannot wait to see and hear that report from the observers. Time will tell.

Tola Voter are you saying God will punish people who give money for votes? What about people who give contracts for votes and people who pave roads only in their district for votes? What about people who pay ferry tickets for votes? Will God punish them too?

I don't recall any commandment saying "thou must not pay people for votes". But I do recall one saying "thou must not bear false witness". I also read in that same book that by the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread. That means you should work hard, do your very best, and not depend exclusively on Government for a better life. That is why sensible BVI voters rejected the VIP and their socialist promises.

In no European Country could they get a Workpermit, if they do not speak the language. They talk about labour department, but can vote? How? They had to live here 25 years to become a belonger, to be able to vote. And they still don't speak English? That is a complete disrespect to our country. May be someone paid them to make such a statement about NDP. They have a business here and don't even speak English?

Much white envelops were given out...I know of two persons that received in excess of $1000.00 days before election from NDP candidates. This place is out of control with greed and corruption and it needs to be regulated. I for one would like a list of all the big sponsors for this election. 'So that no contracts would be given to large financial supporters 'that's a conflict of interest' and would allow for a more balanced election next time around. VINO keeping up on things, God will use them to expose much, more evils in this place. Watch God Work, what is in the dark will come to light! The eastern districts within recent elections have shown overwhelming support to NDP candidates at the pools, and really have no need for these sort of unethical antics.

I have to believe all my friends and family are lying to me because they too say no one has ever offered them money to vote. Where are these envelopes passed out? Is it because we all vote across as respectable citizens with high morals and standards? Are there only certain people that get offered payment for votes? These allegations make me angry every election. Some people said they videotaped the bribes taking place. So why aren't these public? If this is taking place it certainly isn't limited to one party because I've heard far more stories about the opposition making payments. Thing is though, from all the comments I read online during the election and now, I believe there are far too many people out there that believe these envelopes of money exist than have actually ever been in receipt of one.

I think the Premier just like to sweep things under the rug by saying he doesn't know... Furthermore, It seems as the NDP can do anything and the people must lap they tail and be humble.. but September isn't to far away meson back to school and out off work..
