EE Hispanic family accuses NDP of trying to buy votes
This news site visited members of the Vinzen family in East End, Tortola who were bold enough to make the allegation on record.
Throughout the brief election campaign, the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) has been making the accusation that persons from the NDP have been visiting various communities distributing 'white envelopes' to people with the hope that such persosn would vote for them.
Pointing to his elder relative, a young man translating into English what his elder relative said told this news site that persons from “the red party” came and offered him money. But he said that he did not take it as he did not support that party because they did nothing in almost four years.
“He say that he want change to see what could happen,” said the young man as he translated for his relative.
Pointing to his aunt, the young man said, “She was saying that they come to her business with money in an envelope and she started arguing with them and they was saying like she was not good. She told them she wanted change. She said it was disrespectful to her for them to come to the business.”
Concerns regarding Labour and Immigration
According to the members of the family, they are concerned that it costs too much for renewal of work permit and other immigration and labour related services.
They said too that the time allowed in the country is too brief. Further, they said that there is a need for more bilingual people working in the Labour Department and at the Immigration Department as they are given a hard time when there is a language barrier to deal with.
According to the persons, they have put these and other questions to members of the NDP during rallies and other occasions and they have not received any response.
“The NDP is blocking everything for outside people. We is nothing to NDP,” one of the persons said. “The VIP always have an answer for the poor people…the NDP always too high so you couldn’t reach to them,” she said.
Not true says Premier Smith
Contacted for a comment, Premier Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith refuted the allegations that the NDP tried to buy votes.
"As far as I know nobody in the party has offered money to anybody. There is no indication that anybody in the National Democratic Party has offered money to anybody to vote for them," he said, adding that it was the first time he was hearing of the allegations.

I don't recall any commandment saying "thou must not pay people for votes". But I do recall one saying "thou must not bear false witness". I also read in that same book that by the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread. That means you should work hard, do your very best, and not depend exclusively on Government for a better life. That is why sensible BVI voters rejected the VIP and their socialist promises.
this is really stupid, people need to learn when to shut their mouth specially when everything is over.
So if he turned his back on the NDP then why was he there.
Now that is something! They demand the labour Dept. to be bi-lingual? We are an English-speaking Country. You want to live here - learn English. (I had too before I moved to the BVI). In no European Country could they get a Workpermit, if they do not speak the language. They talk about labour department, but can vote? How? They had to live here 25 years to become a belonger, to be able to vote. And they still don't speak English? That is a complete disrespect to our country. May be someone paid them to make such a statement about NDP. They have a business here and don't even speak English?
tak yo head Outta Yo @$$.. or remove your panties brah.. Everybody knows that white envelopes were given high and low.
You were the only one who didn't give none Out..brah come again
The election is over and although
i know you supported the VIP they lost .Now is the time for all of us to come together for the common goal of all the
people and stop the divisiveness and move the country forward. You know within yourself if these people are talking
about labor and immigration issues then they cannot vote.
The eastern districts within recent elections have shown overwhelming support to NDP candidates at the pools, and really have no need for these sort of unethical antics.
...you realise the VIP were beaten 11 seats to 2: the voting public of this territory made it very clear on June 8 2015; the people of this territory had many options especially on the at large ticket and voted for NDP: I living in country were we have freedom of choice: don't get upset because you wasted your vote on 8 June; regroup and come in 2019.....
I think the Premier just like to sweep things under the rug by saying he doesn't know... Furthermore, It seems as the NDP can do anything and the people must lap they tail and be humble.. but September isn't to far away meson back to school and out off work..
