Drivers are encouraged to know driver’s license processes

Drivers are asked to follow the driver's license processes.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - To ensure faster transactions and increased efficiency at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) drivers are encouraged to know the requirements for obtaining a driver’s licence and renewals.

The DMV Commissioner, Ms. Lorna Christopher told the Department of Information and Public Relations that “A person applying for a Virgin Islands Driver’s License who does not hold a valid foreign driver’s licence must apply for a learner’s permit, pass the written, cone and road skills tests.”

In the case of obtaining a temporary driver’s license Ms. Christopher explained that a temporary license can be granted to persons visiting the Territory for more than 30 days and who holds a valid driver’s license issued by the country of his or her residence. “A temporary license is valid for no more than three months for a fee of $10.00,” she noted.”

Once permanent residence in the BVI has been established then drivers can obtain a permanent license. Ms. Christopher added that a valid original driver’s license as proof of authenticity must be provided along with a pass mark on the written test.

All applicants who have passed the written test are required to present a series of documents as part of the application process, such as a foreign driver’s license, written test certificate, social security card, passport, blood type card, a recent passport sized photograph, and a valid eye exam which may be taken at the Department of Motor Vehicles or any licensed medical practitioner which should indicate vision strength example 20/20 or 20/30 for each eye.

Ms. Christopher also mentioned that a choice of an employment contract or employment letter for employees of Government, work permit, or belonger’s card can be used as proof that the person is living in the Territory.

Ms. Christopher explained that, “All licenses may be renewed within 60 days prior to the expiration date.” Documentation required to complete the process include the old driver’s license, proof of citizenship, a completed driver’s license renewal form and a valid eye examination. Drivers over the age of 70 will be required to present a medical report providing a full evaluation of physical fitness to drive in the Territory.

Drivers have the option of renewing licenses for a period of one year at a fee of $15.00 or three years for $35.00.

The Department of Motor Vehicles seeks to provide efficient and accurate services in the vehicle licensing matters and promote driver safety in compliance with the Road Traffic Legislation of the Territory.

I thought BVI drivers won their licenses in a raffle. Can't imagine any of them have ever actually passed a driving test.
