VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – Leader and Chairman of the National Democratic Party (NDP 1), Hon Myron V. Walwyn (AL) is encouraging citizens to vote on issues rather than following party politics, given the current situation in the Virgin Islands (VI), post-Irma and Maria of 2017.

Hon Walwyn made the utterance on the evening of January 16, 2019, during a public NDP rally held on Virgin Gorda (VG) where here urged citizens and his supporters that if a candidate or party is pushing forward a proposal or idea that doesn’t make life better, you should tell them “sing a Sankey”.

Critical Point

“This election coming up, I know you hear it all the time that every election is the most important and most crucial one… you hear people say we are at the crossroads every time an election comes,” he told those gathered in VG.

“But we are at a very critical point now, because of the events that took place with Hurricanes Irma and Maria and also of course, some of the issues we are facing internationally with our financial services and other things,” the NDP Chairman said.

In underscoring his point that all votes count, Mr Walwyn left no stone unturned in encouraging all the people of the VI to go out and exercise their democratic rights.

“I want to encourage as many persons as possible, those who may have turned 18 years within the last four years or those who have become Belongers over that period of time, or even those before then… to get out and register to vote because your vote matters,” he said.

Vote on Issues – Walwyn

“I want to say to you, let your decisions be based on issues, the issues that affect the country. If somebody is coming to you with something that does not make your life better for the next four years, tell them if they have nothing to say, please sing a Sankey,” he told those gathered to loud laughter and applause.

According to Hon Walwyn, “When you go into that voting box, you must make intelligent decisions, you must think about yourself, you must think about your parents, you must think about your children and your grandchildren even if they are not born,” he uttered while pushing the NDP as the party of choice to lead the territory forward.

He further warned that if ever there was a time to come out and vote, the time is now.

Over the years, the NDP Government let by Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith (AL) has been accused of running an 8-year regime that lacked transparency, accountability and was full of corruption allegations.

The NDP Government was also involved in several high profile scandals were public officials have accused the party’s top brass of breaking laws and recklessly spending public funds.

Look at his face, the low turnout must have him worried and scared. That’s a face of desperation. You going down my boy, your time is up so goodbye to you, enjoy your retirement. The wrong way right now is the NDP way. Blatant mismanagement, corruption, disrespect, no accountability and many more. You if all persons who have no respect for authority cannot be premier of this territory. You breached protocol and procedures when you made public that AG report, you were called upon to make a public apology by your leader and premier, you said a few words which is not apologetic and in a spin when you heard the Governor had forwarded the report to the police, you publicly show your disrespect again for the Governor and the Premier when you said you should not have apologize. Are you for real Myron Walwyn, you really cannot be serious.

Mr. Myron Walwyn were you a member of the NDP for the last eight years? The way you sounded is like you are a new comer yo this whole thing. All of a sudden you can see what all needs to be done. You sit with the same NDP for the last eight years, why all these things you are talking about now wasn’t done. We will not be fooled this time around, so for God sake, go sit down.

Undoubtedly, the BVI is at a crossroad. The September 2017 hurricanes decimated the territory, causing approximately $3.6B in facility damages, damaging roads, utilities (water, sewage, electricity), structures, government buildings, commercial buildings, single and multi-family housing, recreational facilities, public safely facilities......etc. Additionally, the storms have also disrupted GDP, employment and economy. Decimation not withstanding, the VI has a chance to rebuild almost from scratch; it is a new beginning.

A general election is constitutionally due no later than 16 April 2019. This is election is truly critical and the new government will be faced with a myriad of critical issues and the 13- member HOA will have to make many major decisions on national priorities. The electorate should make decision(s) based on national interest, not self interest. Political parties and independent candidates must communicate effectively how they plan a) to improve the lives of residents and b) to progressively advanced the national interest. Encourage every eligible voter to register to vote and vote. Many have sacrificed for the right to vote and it should be exercised. Every vote matters and can make a difference. Make your vote count. Voting and not voting are both choices but voting may be a better choice.
