DJ calls for all-inclusiveness for VG Easter Festival hiring
“There [are] a few local entertainers that are not being hired by the Virgin Gorda Festival Committee, they only hiring people like friends,” alleged Mr Lennard.
He named bands like Elvis White and Latitude stars and other local DJs like himself DJ roots and country style who he said having not been getting work with the committee. “They not working with us, they never hold a meeting, they never asked for us to be a part of the festival committee and we are part of the community,” he said.
He alleged that there is no local band that is doing the Jouvert this year at the Easter festival in Virgin Gorda. “Boss from Showtime might be holding a mic and Big Shaw from Jammer HP going be on the same truck. But we have local bands like session reloaded, Elvis White, the legendary Ecstasy but no local band was asked to play so I don’t know what the issues is with the committee,” he alleged.
He said, “This make me feel bad. It make me remember last year when Tino wasn’t getting no job and he went on Facebook and blast them now I here with the same thing this year.”
Contacted on the allegations Chairman of the Easter Festival Committee Ms Sasha D.A. Flax said that she was very surprised at the allegations levied at the committee. She said that having maximum participation by locals has been something the committee has been diligent about.
She said that most of the locals were contacted, “Even Beatz was contacted to play on the Monday and he told us that he had a previous booking, so I am very surprised that he of all persons is saying this.” Ms Flax said that several others that are on the list to participate this year were also contacted.
“Would you believe one band told us they cannot participate in the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival because they are more focused on preparing for the 60th? Yes we are for our people and have been doing our best at getting as many of our own involved, this is not no friend game, we are all one family here in Virgin Gorda everyone knows everyone,” she lamented.
Mr Lennard said that he has no personal bones with Ms Flax as she is someone that he extensively admires as a young woman in a leadership role, “But I know it’s some of the people she has on that committee that making sure that their friends get work.” He also noted that while he has no problem with the participations of bands from St Croix, USVI and other outside Territories, the system should be designed to ensure that most of the money stays at home.
