ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Junior Minister for Tourism and Territorial At Large Representative, Honourable Shereen D. Flax-Charles said she was rebuked for always looking out for the people of Virgin Gorda by an unnamed Chairperson of a statutory board recently.

“Mr Speaker, I had the unfortunate encounter with a chairperson of a board while in a meeting speaking about certain projects. I mentioned a project on Virgin Gorda that can bring substantial revenue to the territory. I was told ‘I don’t want to hear Virgin Gorda out of your mouth! Virgin Gorda is coming out of your mouth too often’,” she said at the First Sitting of the Second Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) on Thursday, November 14, 2019.

Sexism?

“So I had to address it, it was on my chest. I could not come into this HoA today and not speak of this. It bothered me for two weeks that I barely slept. I would even venture, Mr Speaker, to say that Chairperson would not have said that to a male member of the HoA,” the Junior Tourism Minister added.

I put him in his place!

Hon Flax-Charles then told the HoA that she ‘put him (Chairperson) in his place!’ when he uttered those words to her.

She continued, “It is unconscionable, it is disrespectful that we should speak to each other in that manner. We promote that it is ‘One BVI’. I’m a Virgin Gordian, I am a British Virgin Islander, and most recently I am an At-Large-Representative of this territory. Therefore, I not only represent Virgin Gorda where I live, but I also represent every single district in this territory. If Tortola does well, the entire BVI does well if Virgin Gorda does well, Anegada does well, Jost van Dyke does well.”

Flax-Charles then questioned whether other persons would soon be rebuked for calling names of villages and islands.

“What are we coming to? Who will it be next? Will it be Tortola? Will I not be able to mention the word Tortola? Will any member of the House not be able to mention Baughers Bay, West End, Sea Cows Bay?” she asked.

Don’t let the power get to you

The vocal Representative then reprimanded the Chairperson and others like him to remain humble despite the position they hold.

“Please do not allow power and authority to get to your head! I think the Honorable R.T O’Neal would be saddened by this because as a Virgin Gordain he worked for the entire BVI,” she pointed out.

If you are not willing to name the offender then hush. It is unprofessional to say say without proof. Annoying and juvenile set of grown men and women with complaints but wont name the culprit just to waste time in attempt at being relevant. Nothing to address so move on to tangible issues and park your ego . You took care of it so u say so nothing here.

@Here hear, clearly you are an unprofessional person. It will be unprofessional on the part of Hon. Flax- Charles to go into the HOA and name that individual. It is not in keeping with good governance and good principle. I will leave that for someone like Ma** who have no moral and ethical principle.

Well though I understand what Hon Andrew Fahie wants to do in looking out for his own. It must be noted that his own is frightening against each other for position. Likewise, these Board members are doing whatever it takes to put the expatriates out of a job, so that the very same Board members can put there own expats families and friends in these same statutory companies. But at the end of the day,Politicians will always be con artist to the unwise. So Hon Fahie put a leash on your Board members for some of these expats have endured a lot to build some of these statutory companies by being under paid, or being overworked and no overtime and when you talk they want to victimize you especially at 2-22-9-1-1.

Hon Flax-Charles, do not get too thin-skin; politicians have to have kin like an old wife fish. Goats, cows, sheep.....etc feel where they are tied. You are a Virgin Gordian so it I so no shame to advocate for Virgin Gorda. Virgin Gorda/Anegada should gets its fair share of the pie as the other districts. However, as 1 of 4 at large members, you must also advocate for the other 8 districts. You were right to read the statutory board member the riot act. Is their sexism, national origin, religious, race, disability......etc bias in the BVI? Yes. Nonetheless, we cannot jump to conclusion so quickly about specific bias.

I am so glad that the behavior of Board Members is brought to light. the only thing is this behavior is going on long time where these members do not have a clue what is happening, insulting their senior employees and interfering with the day to day running of the organizations. I hope before their appointments to these positions they are told what their job description entails. Please appoint persons who have some idea about the portfolio.

Clearly, she is looking out for the BVI - the BVI is no longer only Tortola, nor is Tortola only, the BVI. All the islands form this Territory. VG and the other islands have too-long been neglected. Why all the hate? When VG and the other islands are recognized and developed appropriately, the whole Territory benefits. When Tortola alone is the recipient of all the projects, development, etc, then Tortola gets overdone. Not good for anyone. Live and let live.

The majority of Tolians don't like Virgin Gordians but Little Dix Bay jump-started the BVI economy from 1964. The late J.R. O'neal, a Virgin Gordian, played an integral role in the BVI's economy. KNOW YOUR HISTORY. If you have a problem with we VG people, lay down beside it. I was born in Tola but I am a Virgin Gordian to my backbone. In the event anyone has a problem with VG people, Anegada people or Jost Van Dyke people, Government should ensure that you make your contribution to the economy by paying a port fee whenever you visit these beautiful outer islands. Yes we are beautiful and I don't need your approval.

The answer is simple. PUSH and PUSH to remove the chairman at the end of his term. Maybe even sooner, if the contract terms allow it. Be the tough VG person you claim to be, don't let it slide or you may lose the next election.
    • @VG (17/11/2019, 11:26) Like (2) Dislike (1) Reply
That might be part of the answer but the other part is to have Hon. Shereen Flax-Charles grow up and stop trying to divide the BVI and she needs to be more respectful to we the people from Anegada to Jost Van Dyke. If not she will lose next elections.
