ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Engineer and businessman Mr Dion M. Jennings is making a bid to be an Independent candidate to contest the Sixth District in the upcoming elections in the Virgin Islands on June 8, 2015 as he said several issues in the district are of concern to him.

Jennings launched his campaign yesterday May 7, 2015 with a press statement outlining his intentions and highlighted some of the issues that have caused him to decide to run.

He also expounded on some of these during an exclusive interview with this news site, including a secondary road in Baugher’s Bay and recreational facilities for families in the district.

No proper infrastructure

“The secondary road in Baugher’s Bay has not been established. It has been a walking trail for all those years. The Government has not created the proper infrastructure to cut and pave [that road] and it creates the situation in Baugher’s Bay where if an emergency happens no one can get out of the district,” he said, adding that it cannot just be one way in and one way out.

He said that the infrastructure in the district is in a state of dilapidation. “Roads damaged by rains a few years ago have not been addressed. There are drainage issues…the ghut has not been properly maintained on a regular basis. They are not being cleaned on a regular basis and when the salt water comes it is backed up and it creates a problem for the community,” he told Virgin Islands News Online in an exclusive interview.

“There are public facilities that are not being maintained and managed. We have built facilities with Government funds and we have just left them there, dilapidated with no management in place," he said.

In his release, he said that after thought, prayers, consideration and discussion with his wife, children, family and friends, he made the decision to contest the 6th District electoral seat in the House of Assembly in the next general elections as an Independent candidate.

Biographical information

Dion M. Jennings was born at Peebles Hospital on April 5, 1968 to Elia Pickering of Baughers Bay and William Jennings of Long Look, Tortola, Virgin Islands. He is the grandson of Ella Hodge Pickering and Clifford Pickering of Baugher’s Bay on his mother side of the family. He is the grandson of Catherine and Joseph Jennings of Belle Vue and Jennings Hill on his father side of the family.

According to the release, he attended St Phillip School in Baugher’s Bay until he went to St Thomas, USVI for his secondary school education. He graduated in 1987 and excelled in sports, for which he gained a scholarship to Savannah State University, in Savannah Georgia to run Track and Field and play Football. He graduated in 1992 with a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology.

It said that upon leaving college he worked for an engineering company for a brief time in Atlanta, Georgia U.S.A and decided to go into the music and entertainment business which he has been doing for over 25 years. “Dion has owned and operated numerous night clubs and restaurants in the U.S.A , U.S. Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands. He has produced some of the biggest acts in the music and entertainment industry such as the legendary Marley family, Buju Banton , Lil Wayne and Tyler Perry just to name a few. He has done branding and marketing for such companies like American Airlines, Coors Light, Best Western Hotels just to name a few,” it said.

It added that along with his other business, he has operated an engineering and construction company that have done many projects in the VI such as the West End Terminal Building, A Low Income Housing project, Baugher’s Bay Fisherman Marina and a joint venture company that constructed the Cruise Ship Tender Dock, along with many road and infrastructure works throughout the VI over the last 20 years.

No party politics

“I have worked with both the VIP and NDP administrations. I have and will continue to work with any government that is in the best interest of the 6th District. As an independent candidate, it allows me to work in the best interest of the 6th district and the people of the BVI and not play party politics with the business of the people of the BVI,” he said in his statement.

“As the 6th District Representative I will use my international business experience, exposure and education to make the BVI a better place for all of us to live. I look forward to meeting and working with all of you in the coming days and weeks leading up to the next general election to discuss my vision and plans for our district and our beloved country,” he said.

Maybe some people did not get the memo:

This is not a special olympics race...
This is a political election to see who will manage the affairs of the country...

While the party that is in is not perfect by far flying in from Atlanta for a couple of months out of the week to take advantage of a contract is not the ideal candidate.

Spend some real time in the BVI looking after and caring for the community from the millions you have made in BVI contracts then we will take you seriously. For now you are simple a vote spoiler...
