ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - On Sunday May 12, 2013, Peter Island Resort & Spa held their first Island-Athlon Challenge, with 22 Adults and 17 Youths competing in some fast and furious Kayaking, Biking and Running.

The start/finish line of this inaugural event was located at the Watersports center on stunning Deadman’s Bay Beach and the competitors turned in some unique performances, notably 16 year old Ricardo Jones in Challenge ‘A’, who produced the fastest bike leg of the day and the slowest kayak, to end up 2nd overall.

First time competitor, 17 year old George Davies, was the winner of the biggest challenge and prize. He received an all expenses paid one night stay at Peter Island Resort & Spa. He managed to hold off a late charge by veteran Adrian Dale by 30 seconds.

The youth event saw a very heated challenge that was not decided between the top three boys until the final metres of run on the sand, which made an exciting finish for all the volunteers and spectators that turned out to watch.

“Peter Island Resort & Spa really pulled out all the stops to make this the most successful event I have ever had the privilege of organising,” said Chris Ghiorse. “The support provided by all the staff, the beauty of the island course and breakfast would make this a memorable event; the prizes they gave the top three for each challenge put them in a category all their own.”

General Manager Wilbert Mason remarked that he hopes the event can grow from strength to strength. He feels the enthusiasm of the participants justifies the initiatives Peter Island Resort & Spa has implemented in offering this challenge to guests. As a show of support for the local community PIRS will donate part of the guest fee to a local charitable cause, such as BSAFE.

“I would like to thank all the volunteers that sacrificed their Mother’s Day to help make the Peter Island-Athlon Challenge a safe and resounding success,” said Chris. “I would also like the public to note that none of this would have been possible without the support that BSAFE receives from Caribbean Insurers, Ogier, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Burke’s Garage and the BVITF for its youth development programmes.
