Persons from all walks of life, including children, made their way to the CGB Baptist Church grounds to especially get samples of the various delicious dishes and beverages unique to countries such as Jamaica, Guyana, St Lucia, St Kitts, Barbados, Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago. CANE GARDEN BAY, Tortola, VI- It was indeed an array of flags, food and fun in keeping with the theme of the Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church’s International Cultural Day on Saturday September 28, 2013.

Some persons also completed the fun with dancing to local music.

“It was a great display of food and various cultures of the different nations. The attendance was also very good. The excitement was very good, people were very appreciative of what they saw and what they experienced. There was a lot of excitement in the air to the point that the people are looking forward to the next one,” commented Senior Pastor of the Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church, Reverend Dr. Melvin A. Turnbull.

The event had a three-fold purpose, which were to foster an appreciation in the hearts of the young for the rich heritage of the VI and the Caribbean; to showcase the diversity in the “Body of Christ” since there were some 15 different nations of the more than 20 nations that comprise the Cane Garden bay Baptist Church represented; and to manifest the unity in the Body of Christ that Jesus prayed for in John 17, said Dr. Turnbull. All of the objectives, he said, were fulfilled.

The International Cultural Day was not a competitive event. “Knowing our people, of course they strive for excellence so of course everybody tried to the best they could but there was a competitive spirit in the sense that they strove for excellence. It was just a matter of highlighting the various cultures and to embrace the diversity that we have.”

Judging from the many comments about the activity, Dr Turnbull said he could have only concluded that the event was a great success. “Many people commented it was a great idea, it was well organized, it was just a success so, judging from that and the participants themselves, I can safely say it was a great success.”

Next up for the CGB Baptist Church is Pastor’s Appreciation Month in October. “I will just leave that to the people, so I don’t know what they have planned,” Dr Turnbull said with a laugh.

The food...! the marbles...! the runners...! Richest culture in the eastern Caribbean and we are allowing the outsiders to replace it with their own.

Yes we really do have a rich culture here in the Virgin Islands. Both US and British VI. I love to see the diversity but at the end of the day we have to make sure our rich vi culture is being maintained. No disrespect to any other countries.
