ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Virgin Islands (VI) will now be moving into complete lock-down starting Friday, March 27, 2020, at 8:00 pm with an early curfew starting tonight Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at 8:00pm to 6:00am.

The curfew comes after two cases of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) were confirmed in the British Overseas Territory.

This announcement was made at a special press conference tonight, March 25, 2020 by Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), alongside Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) and Governor of the Virgin Islands, H.E. Augustus J. U. Jaspert.

Curfew in effect from tonight

"We have now decided that under the Curfew Act 2017, a curfew will be imposed from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am effective, Wednesday 25, March 2020, which is from this evening until further notice with the exception of essential workers," Premier Fahie announced as part of Cabinet endorsed recommendations.

Hon Fahie continued, "All persons are expected to be home after 8:00 pm, we know that given the time that this is being announced that certain workers will be on the way home probably slightly after eight seeing that businesses were already closing at eight... but we are saying now that the curfew is in place," he said.

Earlier today, Premier Fahie announced that two cases of COVID-19 had been confirmed in the Territory in Patient A, a 56-year-old male who travelled from Europe on March 15, 2020.

The second case was confirmed in another patient referred to as Patent B, a 32-year-old male resident who travelled from New York, USA and came into contact with someone who had tested positive for the virus on March 8, 2020, before arriving in the VI on March 10, 2020.

With the confirmation of these cases, Hon Fahie said the curfew will also continue on Thursday, March 26, 2020, from 8:00 pm to 6:00 pm the same as tonight's implementation.

24/7 Curfew from Friday @ 8:00pm

Further, as part of the announcements, the Premier announced a 6-day lockdown starting Friday, March 27, 2020, at 8:00 pm until April 2, 2020, where no one is expected to leave their homes until the curfew is lifted.

The Premier said law enforcement officers will be out in numbers to make sure the curfew is followed. "Do your shopping and do whatever you need to do to be able to stay at home from Friday evening at 8:00om where there will be a very strict curfew for the entire Territory from 8:00 pm on Friday until the 2nd of April in the first instance with the exception of essential workers."

He said the aim is to make sure health authorities get to do their work and ensure the safety of the Territory while containing the spread of the virus.

    Some people are extremely stubborn especially the younger folks who enjoy hanging out on the block. People need to take this virus serious. Wish the RVIPF was equipped with drones so that they could monitor different areas.

      @ Lord: if you are from the VI and stuck outside it might not be a bad things because truth be told we do not have adequate resources should the matter increase......my people lock-out 2 but where they are the healthcare is a bit better remember this health condition is universal.....

    Thanks! Now hundreds will be lined up at the stores because of the Friday complete shutdown and stores only letting in a hand full of people so what the f*** are we really achieving here? People are going to be on lockdown for 6 full days so shopping will be a must whether big or small. With the sudden announcement now you are defeating the purpose as large crowds will be everywhere. So lets all gather up to rush shop tomorrow and Friday then be locked up with loved ones for 6 days so we can make sure they also get it if we got it. Good f****** job!

      All you have to do like I am going to do is get up early, get to the supermarket, get what I have to get, pay for my items and right back to the safety of my home.

    I don't think have we all as prisoners in our own houses is wise. We all deserve some time under the sun! Even the prisoners have this right!

    PREMIER DID THE RIGHT THING. IM GOING TO REITERATE LEADERSHIP IS NOT AN EASY JOB. SLEEPLESS DAYS AND NIGHTS. MOST TIMES NOT ABLE TO EAT ON TIME. FAMILY SUFFERS IN ORDER FOR THEM TO SERVE OTHERS. YOU NAME IT AND IF YOU DOUBT ME YOU TAKE UP LEADERSHIP ROLE AND YOU WILL FIND OUT INSTEAD OF HERE TRYING TO PAINT THE GOVERNMENT AND OPPOSITION BLACK.

    THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF YOU HAVE TO BE CALLED FOR THIS KIND OTHERWISE IT WILL BREAK YOU. TRUST ME THIS IS NOT JUST RUNNING YOUR OWN HOUSEHOLD.

    THESE PEOPLE ARE DOING THEIR BEST THIS UNPRECEDENTED TIMES. TAKE A MOMENT AND PRAY FOR THEM BECAUSE THEY NEED IT AND THEY NEED US AND WE NEED THEM. WITH ALL HANDS ON DECK ALL OF US CAN COME OUT OF THIS.

    Coming to pass!

    20 Go, my people, enter your rooms
    and shut the doors behind you;
    hide yourselves for a little while
    until his wrath has passed by.
    21 See, the Lord is coming out of his dwelling
    to punish the people of the earth for their sins.
    The earth will disclose the blood shed on it;
    the earth will conceal its slain no longer.

    Just a few questions what about the pregnant ladies who are about to give birth and have to see their doctors during this 24/7 lockdown period. Will these doctors be making house calls? What provisions are made in instances such as these?
