Controversial entertainment site names Premier Smith “Mumu of the day!”

- was this an insult & disrespectful to the political leader of the Virgin Islands by the online site Krazy Hype? Did the arrest of one of the founders of the site have anything to do with the harsh words against the Premier?
The newly established entertainment online site Krazy Hype.com, owned and operated by locals including the controversial and outspoken hospital worker Ramoamasagana ‘Masa’ Pemberton, labeled the Virgin Islands’ Head of Government Premier Dr The Honourable D. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The newly established entertainment online site Krazy Hype.com, owned and operated by locals including the controversial and outspoken hospital worker Ramoamasagana ‘Masa’ Pemberton, labeled the Virgin Islands’ Head of Government Premier Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith as being the “Mumu of the day” in its online article last month, October 2015.

Free speech or gone too far?

Speaking with a source close to the Virgin Islands newest social online entertainment site, we were told that one of the features of Krazy Hype is to label someone in the territory ‘Mumu of the Day’ based on them making silly decisions that affect others and this person is then announced on a local radio show, and posted on their site.

According to the article posted by the entertainment site last month, Dr Smith, the Virgin Islands (VI) second Premier, was given the title after he backed out of a meeting with a National Health Insurance Concerned Citizens Group headed by political activist Natalio D. Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru.

Since the Krazy Hype article, the Premier has met with the group although recently they complained publicly that he has not gotten back to them after over a month.

Some supporters of the ruling National Democratic Party, the political organisation of Premier Smith, have accused Krazy Hype of being downright disrespectful, insulting and “out of order” to Premier Smith and have stopped short of demanding that the article be removed and Hon Smith be given an apology.

Persons close to Premier Smith claim that he was offended by the label of being called a ‘Mumu’, a term used in the local VI culture to refer to a person who acts dumb, useless or lacks basic common sense.

Others in the progressive class have said it is freedom of speech, notwithstanding that one cannot cry fire in a crowded room when there is no fire.

Arrest of Krazy Hype founder; Was there a link?

Ramoamasagana ‘Masa’ Pemberton, one of the persons behind the newly established controversial entertainment site Krazy Hype, was arrested last month, weeks after the article on the Premier came out. Many in the community and on social network were questioning whether there was a link to the article and his arrest.

He was allegedly arrested for posting on his Facebook page a video of a female performing a sexual act on a man at a business place on the eastern end of Tortola.

While many have been concerned about why the controversial Mr Pemberton was the only one arrested, as the video may not have originated with his post and has been posted on other residents’ Facebook pages, it is reported that he will be charged with Obscene Publication.

No date has been set for a court hearing, however, before the arrest our newsroom was informed that a search warrant was executed at the home of the young man’s relative and various pieces of equipment, including a computer, were seized.

A few months ago, the same entertainment site, Krazy Hype, named Mr Pemberton aka ‘Masa’ as one of the most hated men in the Virgin Islands.

Mr Pemberton and others associated with the entertainment site could not be reached for comments up to the time of publication.

I have no problem with people calling a spade a spade. When the politicians respect themselves and others then perhaps we should respect them. Archie calling people nasty expats no problem, Ms P mouth has no limits whatever bad word she could pronounce will be spoken. They acting as if their constituents are moo moos so it's all good as long as he don't get vulgar with it. Being a member of government does not exempt them from being a "mumu"

Although I may not agree with the posting of the article, I am not sure if the whole situation isn't hypocritical. During election campaign there was so much disrespect from the politicians towards one another. All kinds of names were called to the point of degrading one another. Was it right then and wrong now? Even young people were used to do adds to disrespect particular politicians and I suppose it was right then. I just can't understand the double standard of this community!

If you do not protect the innate rights of one man yours will surely be violated. The site's labeling the Premier as MUMU of the week is their opinion based on the facts. It maybe distasteful and disrespectful considering that he is the Premier but in no way can it be considered libelous or defamatory as it is opinion and not a stated fact. The site or Mr. Pemberton are entitled to their free opinion and speech based his rights afforded to him by the constitution.

BTW I have heard the media call World Leaders like George Bush and Obama worse names.

RESPECT: according to the dictionary, the word respect means: To show regard or consideration for, to respect someone's right. To refrain from intruding upon or interfering with: to respect a person's privacy.

Now tell me in Gods name where did our leaders respect us when the inteduce the NHI and demand our hard working money without we the people having any say in this. The people are crying out for them to find another way and they are TOTAL DISRESPECTING our cry.
    IS THAT RESPECT?

Why he feel a way when it's the truth. Give me a break, the very gov ministers have all manner of things to say about the country's citizens & even outsiders but feel a way when we call them down to? Get over ya'll damn selves & deal with it. Everyday you go on the WWW & you see ppl calling down Obama so why Smith & others feel they so special and we shouldn't say what we have to about them. Show me which minister in gov have any respect for us the citizens and i'll change my tongue......NOT!! This same premier just weeks ago claim he never said anything about the $90m yet articles & recordings of him were produced & up to yet I haven't seen nor heard anything from him refuting the fact that he's a bold face LIAR!! Smith go rest yourself down somewhere & run the country like it ought to rather than letting others make up your mind for you. Sick of all you politicians thinking you something special...SICK OF IT!

Using profanity in a public place is an offense so how come Ms P wasn't arrested when she used curse word at one of our elected representative? No one has shown more disrespect to persons than the NDP but the majority still voted for most of them to rule us under fear and dictatorship. Ms P told the Caribbean people that the 1st they saw a hundred dollar bill is when they came to BVI. Ronnie curse bad words in the House of Assembly at elected members while Ms P did it outside. The Premier said he rescued the country financially and won the elections assuring all that he has 90 million dollars in the bank. Now he doesn't remember saying that while you have hell to get paid from government when you do any work for them because it is now we broke. The NDP is doing an reinactment of the "TITANIC" story. We are sinking. We are going down but their public relations through their excellent speeches have us thinking otherwise. This to me is real disrespect.

A group of letters strung together to form a word does not have to make it into the English dictionary for it to be used and understood. For your information, the word "mumu" or "moo-moo" has two distinct meanings:
      1. A type of dress
      2. A person lacking in basic common sense.
The word moo-moo derives from West Africa and is a word brought over here from the Slaves who came and is in use in West Africa today with carrying the same meaning. If you understand the origin of some words, you would not be on here saying moo-moo is not a word.
It is a word and to describe the leader of our country in this derogatory term should be taken further and Mr. Pemberton cannot now hide behind his constitutional right of 'freedom of speech and expression." Someone should slap a lawsuit on him for defamation of the Premier's character. It is practices like these will keep us as a people from solving our problems together collectively. We lack one of the basic tenants of nation building -respect for our Leaders - Respect for our Elders - Respect for those placed in authority over us.

Can a Citizen arrest a cop for shouting or plaguing a citizen ??? NO ... So Polititians can say what they want to each other ... at the end of the day, they all go and dine at Treasure Isle private dining room ............. But dares a citizen humiliate a Person in Authority, your goose will surely be cooked !!!
