SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – The Department of Conservation and Fisheries today July 14, 2015 put the brakes on the $30 million Nanny Cay Development Project in the wake of environmental concerns emanating from it and the company and the agency are said to be working to amend the issues.

This was confirmed by Kelvin Penn, acting Chief Conservation and Fisheries Officer in the Department of Conservation and Fisheries. Penn said to this news site that while he could not say much about the issue but confirmed that the project had been halted temporarily.

“The project [has been halted] temporarily, yes. It has been put on pause from today,” he said when asked of the action taken. “But we would prefer you speak with the Ministry on this,” he said, referring to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour.

Environmentalist and scientist Dr Cassander Titley-O’Neal when contacted by this news site today about the possible environmental impact of the project said that she had “no comment.”

Speaking with this news site, General Manager of Nanny Cay Resort and Marina, Miles Sutherland-Pilch said that the matter is being discussed among all the parties with a view to resolving it.

“I wouldn’t say it was halted…there were a couple of issues but we’ll know this afternoon…we are working with them,” he said.

“I think we are going to be on track very soon. It is not something that was entirely unexpected. You are making it sound worse than it is,” said Sutherland-Pilch.

We will continue to follow the issue and bring you the latest update with it.

Why they didn`t stop Nail bay. why they didn`t stop the monkeys from coming-in. Why they didn`t stop the Cruise Pier land reclamation. Why? they just Fn up this country, they stop the five star hotel on Beef Island, that other country glad to have. Why they hate progress. they should just take their 30 million to another country and I hope when government laying off they be the first to go.

congratulations Kelvin and Cassandra for doing your job. There was no previous discussion of environmental assessment before this huge project which will obviously impact the coast and mangroves, etc. Density alone in boats, flushing, pollution is possible. Also, where is town and country with this development? how tall and dense are these condos going to be? how close to the water and what is on land fill? Thank you for doing your job. Or will the government override the ruling with special permission?

And to "WHY?" you should do more studying before you give developers a blank check to destroy the environment. Beef island produces 80% of the fish around the territory- yet you are willing to have a 5-star hotel and golf course near Hans creek with pesticides and pollution. Read facts before you point your finger at CFD who is watching out for YOU!!!

Thank you for being a voice of reason in this current state of madness we find ourselves in. I thought I was all alone. And to think they really have people believing this is PROGRESS.

        @????

Uh no, it isn't. It is owned by two Scottish fellows named Cameron McColl and John McCoach for the past 15 years. They bought it from Barclay's Bank in 2000. Prior to that, it had been in receivership for donkey's years. It has never been owned by the BVI Investment Club.

A little amount of investigating on your part would turn up as much as you could ever want to know. It is all public record.

@wize up, that location is owned by BVI Investment Club, exactly what is it that you are trying to "put out there" or have people "run talk it"?

before the plan was approved by town and country, shouldnt they have involved conservation and fisheries? then once all worked together they wouldnt have this problem.
    • pete (15/07/2015, 15:53) Like (7) Dislike (0) Reply
exactly. that is the point. who is advising these developers as to protocol and if the owners really cared, they would find out or volunteer themselves. Has the public seen the master plan? was there a public meeting about the impact to the community? These should be part of the process, not just a few bucks in the pocket. And TCPD and CFD don't have the staff to monitor the whole territory. That is why FONDP (Friends of NDP--- Or Fraser) get away with so much including new sand beaches on Oil Nut Bay and more marinas everywhere which can't accommodate potential volume. Yet we want a bigger airport to fly them in on private jets. We are heading down a slippery slope.
