Concerns as Governor’s Office promotes St David’s Day on H.L. Stoutt’s Day!

- points to 'disconnect' between Governor’s Office & people of VI

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Many in the Virgin Islands may have no idea what is St David’s Day, yet it was promoted by the Governor’s Office on March 1, 2021, the same day the territory was observing a public holiday for the Anniversary of the Birth of its visionary first Chief Minister, Hamilton Lavity Stoutt.

The Governor’s Office used an 8-second video clip that had the words: ‘Happy St David’s Day BVI’ and attributed the post to the Governor’s Office of the Virgin Islands.

‘Provocative’

Many in the Virgin Islands have since called our newsroom on the controversial post, labelling it as provocative and even disrespectful to the people of the Virgin Islands.

“Clearly there’s no regard for us as a people. On a day where we remember our first Chief Minister and all he did for us the Governor’s Office is asking us to remember St David. Who is St David is what most persons are asking,” a concerned resident expressed to our newsroom.

Another said the post identifies a disconnect between the Governor’s Office and the people of the Virgin Islands.

A James Woods, commenting on the post on the Facebook page of the Governor’s Office, said: “Not to be insensitive to St David (whomever he may be) but its H. Lavity Stoutt Day here in the BVI.”

No response was given to Mr Woods’ comment by the Governor’s Office.

There was also no previous post on the said Facebook page extending well wishes to the Virgin Islands on its own public holiday.

Damage already done?

An hour later; however, the link to the livestream for the Wreath Laying Ceremony and H. Lavity Stoutt Commemorative Celebration was posted on the Governor’s Office Facebook Page and it stated “H Lavity Stoutt led for 38 transformative years in BVI and left an incredible legacy for generations to follow, especially in the field of education. The Governor was pleased to join in paying tribute to the pioneer at a wreath laying and remembrance service, and wishes everyone in BVI a happy holiday, in honour of H Lavity Stoutt.”

According to our research, Saint David's Day, or the Feast of Saint David, is the Catholic feast day of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, and falls on March 1, 2021, the date of Saint David's death in 589 AD. The feast has been regularly celebrated since the canonisation of David in the 12th century, by Pope Callixtus II, though it is not a public holiday in the United Kingdom.

The strange and provocative post comes as the territory is still reeling from insensitive statements made by ex-Governor Augustus J. U Jaspert that the Virgin Islands should not look forward to reparations for slavery and suggesting that the VI preserves names of landmarks named in honour of known perpetrators of slavery and crimes against humanity.

This is not only news but disrespectful. The Governor and his governor office have no respect for us in the BVI nor our culture. It is all about them. They have disrespected the memory of H.L. STOUTT.

How many from the pro-white Governor’s Office attended our beloved Mr Stoutt’s Memorial Day? Just the Governor? Who only went as required to.
They don’t care about us nor our history. Nor respect it nor us.

Don’t forget we house him and pay for all of his servants, all black by the way. Why? We’re choosing to continue to be enslaved and have this outdated institution with its bigotry imposed on us.

    Time for a reset.

We the people don't understand that it's a war we're in and we have to choose a side. It's not a choice of equal opportunity but one of survival. When you're on the bottom you don't have the luxury of equality of choice but must stack the deck in your favor. we must constantly fight against the European in our head.

St. David's day is an important feast day in Bermuda. Maybe that's why the Governor remembered it. He is coming directly from Bermuda.

This governor continued from where the previous governor left off. When all is sa9 and done, they will blame the Premier that he is picking row with the governor. The governor needs to be more sensitive to the issues that are affecting in the Virgin Islands. As a predominantly black population, certain issues are too sensitive to the population. Especially after all the atrocities that BLACK PEOPLE went through under white supremist . Millions of BLACK PEOPLE were killed and mutilated by whites and no a respect were SHOWN BY THE WHITES. Issues like this will cause the muslin to demonstrate through the streets. The governor need to apologize to the people of this territory.

@ Dancing in the sunshine...it has nothing to do with black or white. Look at Bermuda which is predominantly black as well. They now have a black governor, first for the island, yet nothing is being done to help black people. Race card is outdated by now. Show what you are worth and gain respect that way.

Completely tone deaf pro white Governor’s office showing their true motivations yet again.

Stop imposing your white culture on us. We’re sick of it. Get off our necks and GO HOME!!

WE KNOW YOU EMPLOY WHITE NON BELONGER STAFF ONLY! The only black staff there are servants and secretaries! You never advertise job vacancies there to us. You only hire your white friends. One even had time to write a book whilst ‘working’ there!!

We see them drinking and smoking all the time, disrespecting us and our culture. Did any attend HLS day events? No. Didn’t think so.

Premier, please investigate this disrespectful and uncouth office. It is UNACCEPTABLE how they behave and what they get away with.

Accountability and consequence are LONG OVERDUE!!

Why is everything done by a governor in this territory used by some persons for confusion? If H LStout was alive he would dismiss that behavior. He was a peaceful man and leader.

Stop these unprovoked attacks on the Governor. John Rankin has lived in the UK, Ireland, USA, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bermuda before coming to the BVI. Unlike some readers, his knowledge is not restricted to 60 square miles that constitute the BVI. I think he is entitled to celebrate one of the UK's Patron Saints.
