ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Just about one week to the day 30-year-old Ashburn A. Dawson aka ‘Ashy’ of Carrot Bay, Tortola was gunned down opposite the Sunday Morning Well in the capital Road Town, a Candlelight Vigil will be held in the same location.

It will begin at 6:00 PM on Saturday March 18, 2017. A short ceremony to follow will include tributes, prayers, messages, singing, the lighting of candles and balloons will be released in memory of the deceased.

‘Come forward with any info’

Dawson’s aunt, Lena Thomas-Mongra, in an exclusive with this news site, informed that the event is two-fold in that it will act as a memorial as well as a to encourage members of the public to assist the police in any way with their investigation.

“The family, because he was so close to everyone, thought to do a memorial sooner rather than later, one to remember him publicly, but more importantly to perhaps sensitise the public as to the need for people to come forward,” she informed.

“Come forward with any information that they may have, if anyone believes anything, if anyone saw anything, if they are afraid to reach out to the police do it anonymously, send a note, send a message, something, so that they can assist them with the investigation and try to find out as soon as possible who would have perpetrated this heinous act on Ashburn.”

A mild, loving man

Dawson, who was a businessman and an employee of the High Court Registry where he worked for a number of years, was described by his family as very humble, loving, kind and soft spoken.

“He was good at showing emotions, he liked to kiss, and he liked to hug, very into his family. A lot of people are hurting because of who he was and his character especially. I don’t think for his entire life I have heard him raise his voice five times, he was very soft spoken and mild,” Thomas-Mongra noted.

Family seeks closure

The grieving relative said the police are actively pursuing his murder and the family and friends are still trying to figure out why his life was taken away in the manner that it did.

“So we wanted to reach out to the public, the family would like closure, and closure never happens until you know why your loved one was taken away.”

Stop spreading rumours & help

Thomas-Mongra, in addition, used the opportunity to call on the many persons who she said relishes in spreading rumours about her nephew, to remember them in prayer and instead assist the police in any way they can.

“Rather than spreading things that we don’t know at this time, whether it is true or not,” the hurting woman said.

All are welcome to attend, and Thomas-Mongra thanked those who have shown support and love to the family at their time of loss.

The late Dawson is survived by his parents and one son. The cause of the shooting is still under investigation; however, according to police sources, it was around 10:00 PM on March 10, 2017 while the deceased was on his motor scooter between Centies’ Store and a burger snackette in the area of the Sunday Morning Well, when a hail of gun shots went off allegedly aimed at him.

It is reported that at least three shots hit Mr Dawson and he fell to the ground on the public road. Before the ambulance arrived there were members of the public trying to assist the man; however, he subsequently died at Peebles Hospital, despite many attempts by paramedics to revive him.

So far no one has reportedly been arrested for the crime.

I don't know the young man or his family but, I feel sad inside. Seems like he was a decent young man. So sorry and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends. The person who is responsible might get away from the earthly judge but, not the heavenly judge.

if you don't trust them, why not have a private meeting with the Comissioner of police. If I have information about something, I will pass a note to the person family or go to the Comissioner. This guy murder hit me hard. He had a good job, clean cut well groom guy. Who ever did this to him is going to suffer. And to those who know who did it and not saying anything, you are just as guilty and his blood is dripping from your hands.

That Miami hotline doesn't work and our local authoritizes need to investigate it or stop advertising the number. Those individuals in Miami will tell you they don't take tips or reports from the BVI

Whether local or not, I don't think is the real problem. Some crimes will never be solved because some of these officers be some real groupies(both male and female), instead of doing what they paid to do they seeking stamp of approval from the popular bad boys. Pick a side. If it had more like supa cop on the investigation team, the solve rate would have probably been a lot higher.

Every time I think about it, I feel so bad inside for his family and his son. A dog is better than those who commit the crime and who knows about it. Forgive my saying this but, whoever did this and knows is a bunch of bottom feeding, slum rats. Do they not realize the damage and pain they caused the man son. You dirty b..tards need to be round up and tossed somewhere in the jungle with the wild animals.

Yes they are fake friends. I believe the so call friends knew that this was going to happen to him. If they were true friends they would have warned him. They knew, they saw it happened and they rode off like the dirty sewer rat punks that they are. Watch how they are going to be at his memorial with the fake I care and concern in the family face.

It still feels like a dream despite moving on you was still one person I held dear . I'm sorry for the fights we always had even as friends. I'm sorry I never tired to hear you out. You was a sweet heart, a father , a great friend , humble and kind. Yes you got on my nerves every time we began to argue but I regret never giving you a call or text I know it can't change what has happen to you cause only God knows why he needed you more than all your love ones do but still if I had one wish it would be to just hug you again and let you know I never gave up and I still and will always care. I pray that your soul will find peace, I pray your son will always remember that his father loved him, I pray your true friends and family find comfort when it's hard to smile and most of all I pray that you'll Get JUSTICE! Rest In Eternal Peace and P.S pass the dock and picturing you sitting on top of the wall cooling after work back in the days will always be a memory I'll never got forget . #MUCHLOVEASHY :'(

I knew him through his work with government and I hailed him around 4 that faithful day. He was a very quite young man so sad to see this happen RIP Ashy. With all these killing happening on this small island and being unsolved is really getting to me because evrybody quick to know your business and pass around but when it comes to help solving a murder they turn blind and deaf. I'm really thinking on changing my field of work and become a detective to help solve some of these cold cases and recent murders cause i like challenges and finding a needle in a hay stack. The detectives do need the publics help but there are other ways of getting evidence Cameras not only the cameras the police have put up but any business or buildings with cameras and not only close to the crime scene but other streets that leads in and out that area. This island is too small and nosey for so much unsolved murders yea alot of people don't trust the police so call the anonymous hotline or call Scotland Yard in England. This murder happened to early and in a busy lite area where people hang out on a Friday especially and still awake to see nothing. You going tell me nobody see if the gun man was on foot, bike or vehicle they got to a magician cause nobody can disappear that fast without being seen.

All I can say is sorry for your lost..we dont not know what he was into that it had to turn to violence so we cant put our hand in fire for anybody nor judge a book by its cover...government need to put up more camera out on the streets so the police can be able to atleast have a lead on a case...secondly as parents why waste time on the police to get evidence when u can get it your self...and help the police get the bad guy ....we use it for good and we use it for bad but if you want to stop grieving or have some sort of peace ob*** is the way to go..im sorry but you would have to do what you got to do..ps only cowards hide behind a gun or a mask...
