ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Horseowner Letty Hodge, who recently lost race horse Lake Texoma, is blaming the conditions of the track's surface for her horse’s demise and charged that if the facility cannot be run properly, it should be closed down.

Lake Texoma had to be put down on Saturday July 29, 2012 at the track, after suffering a broken leg while training at the Ellis Thomas Downs, in Sea Cows Bay.

Speaking to Virgin Islands News Online, Ms. Hodge, owner of L & B Stables, said she has been “preaching” for years for there to be qualified personnel to deal with the track, which she described as unprofessional grading and requiring an upgrade of the running surface.

“They have a lot of things that need to be in place, we have a lot of horses who had foot injuries because of the surface,” she charged. “The surface is too deep, now especially coming up to this race, they had all year to get things in place but waited a week before to grade the track and then leave it as that, it wasn’t raked and was uneven.”

The horseowner, who had described the death of Texoma as a major loss to her, said other things such as insurance for horses also need to be looked into.

“If we don’t have anything right and proper in place to run a race track, it’s a waste of time. Many have died here for injuries on the track it’s not right.”

Lack of medicine

Meanwhile, Ms. Hodge also expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of available medication that is used to put down animals. According to her, Lake Texoma had to suffer for hours after his injury before being put down due to the lack of the medicine on island.

In addition, she claimed the local Government veterinarian had to “mix up medicines” to have the drug available to put him down.

“If we will have these type of sports, I think we should have one person who will be there at the service with medication, not outdated ones.”

VI Horseowners’ Association responds

President of the Virgin Islands Horseowners’ Association, Lesmore Smith, when contacted said the condition of the track was not created due to the lack of maintenance, but that it was not completed.

“I want people to understand… the horse owners themselves ask for these things to happen and to assist to help to make it better and accessible for all of us. It’s not isolated to any given day but that was very unfortunate for the caliber of horse. My complete sympathy and the Association goes out to Mrs. Hodge and her entire stable,”.

According to Smith, the horsowners had asked for some adjustments on the track because they said it was a bit deep for international standards. “Meaning when heavy rain comes it tend to take the sand from the outside and into inner section, making the inner rail more sluggish,” he explained noting that the inner rail was designed for six inches but is deeper and up to 10 inches.

He said the committee sought assistance with machinery from someone who had knowledge in the area but added that the works were not fully completed.

He said knowing the surface was not ready, horseowners were taking chances to exercise their horses for the upcoming August 7, 2012 races.

“I am really sorry for what happen because it can happen to any one of us. This is not isolated for any particular day.”

I can remember a young man writing an article about how Government takes care of its investments and he mentioned specifically the race track. Government has invested how much money into this track? We need vets, medicine, trainers, managers etc which I agree. However, who is supposed to fund these personnel and the proper re-surfacing etc? Horse racing fans, horse owners etc, you need to wake up and put the money together and lease the facility from Government. Implement what you deem in necessary and run the show. Ask them to legalize betting at the track exclusively and make your money back. As it relates to insurance, call a meeting with the Insurance companies and get policies on the horses. You don't drive without insurance. You don't build a house without it. Yet, you spend what I spent on my foundation on a horse and have to suffer such losses. Mrs. Hodge, sorry about your loss but unfortunately, it takes a loss in the BVI for people to realize that things need to change.

Legalize paramutuel betting let's get some funding on the track. Otherwise it will remain a white elephant just sucking money from our Treasury without any meaningful returns. Also, why isn't that place used for more shows etc.? There is a lot of seating and ample place for setting up a stage etc.

First of all to have the betting in place at the horse track. Government would have to legalized gambling. Which, therefore people that buys lottery will be at ease. And most of all, the crusise ships will overnight in the BVI. Due to that they are allowed to gamble on the ship.

What is the horse owners association doing with the money they raise every time they have races. We cannot look for government for everything. I am sure that the government helped with this track getting to the position it is today. I would think that if you need all the things that you say you need you would invest that money collected at the gates each time they have races to take care of these issues. Maybe we need a change in everything since all these people in charge now do not know how to take care of anything.

If she knew the track was bad why put your horse on it? Two if you have horses you employ a decent vet. The lady with the vets at west end deals with all the other private horses....maybe you should.... Three if the horses didn't keep getting doped up all the time then they wouldn't have issues. Four you can't have betting and no drug tests on the horses. Five didn't the great Act get retired cos it ran a race in a obviously doped state (full erection)??? That I will admit is what I was told didn't see it with my own eyes.
