ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Former Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) and Social Commentator of the radio show Honestly Speaking, Claude O. Skelton-Cline, has made a call for a special sitting of the House of Assembly (HoA), to bring light to the future of the Territory, giving the new realities on the ground.

The Pastor said again on his radio show on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, “we have yet to hear from all 13 of our elected members in any meaningful way...They too should be provided an opportunity in the peoples' House, to speak intelligently on the varied implications of the Sanction Anti-Money Laundering Bill and equally important, to offer their version of a way forward for the land of our birth.”

Mr Skelton-Cline further added, “...in so doing; it would further inform, galvanise and unify the entire Territory on our priority fight, our common interest and our allied future.”

Leadership matters-Skelton-Cline

In using one of his famous phrases, he said, “leadership matters, and I’m extremely hopeful by the awakening consciousness of the people of these Virgin Islands, our best days are yet ahead.”

Both the Premier, Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith (AL) and Opposition Leader Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) had travelled to London the British capital, to lobby against the amendment of registry for beneficial ownership, however, the Territory  have recently heard from the Opposition Leader,  but not from the Premier on what was accomplished while in London.

Fight on all fronts

In his last Tuesday’s commentary, Skelton-Cline praised E. Benito Wheatley, Director of the BVI London House and the Virgin Islands’ Ambassador to England and the European Union (EU).

In closing his 14 minutes commentary on the May 29, 2018 radio show,  he called on the National Democratic Party (NDP) Administration, “not to relent on a judicial component and collaborative approach with the other Overseas Territories in response to the UK. “There is strength in unity,” Skelton-Cline said.

You really doing a good job for us now that you’re on the other side. It’s good to see how you have been given a reality check. The NDP gang has been living in their own untouchable bubble for quite some time and it’s about to be painfully ruptured. Their leadership performance cannot even be graded. Keep up the good work and stay away from their web before you get trapped up again; they are just bad news and heading down hill fast. Doubt they last the year as a party. From all indication, it appears like we will take a new team to lead the way. NDP is finish- too little too late. At this time all they doing is throwing bad money after bad strategies, instead of focusing on ramping up diversifying our economy.

Yes, there are dark gathering and swerling clouds over financial services and the VI economy. This legislative storm was engineered by the UK HC and HL and Her Majesty’s assent to the amendment to the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Bill that requires OTs to establish by Jan 2020 a public register of beneficial ownership. Financial services contributes approx 60% of government revenues. Consequently, this Bill has the potential to decimate the unbalance and undiversify BVI economy. As such, agree with CSC that a discussion should be held in the HOA on this Bill. Nonetheless, this is a looming national crisis and Dr. Hon Premier Daniel Orlando Smith,AL, MoF needs to address the nation now. The March was the People’s march, not governmet’s, to demonstrate their disgust with the unfairness, constitutional violation, colonial attitude, disriminatory and racial inequality.........etc intent of the Bill. Time is past due for Premier to address the nation.

Can he really call for a sitting of the HOA? Is this within our constitution?
