Cheaper to guard returnees than to shut down VI economy- Premier Fahie

- as borders reopen only for Virgin Islanders, Belongers, Permanent Residents & Naturalised Citizens
Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) said providing security to ensure returning Virgin Islanders, Belongers, Permanent Residents and Naturalised Citizens remain at their designated quarantine facilities is a better option than going through another shut down of the Virgin Islands’ economy if another wave of the Novel Coronavirus surfaces. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A.

He, however, said he wanted to be among the first to welcome those persons back home.

The first phase of the border reopening is to facilitate returning Virgin Islanders, Belongers, Permanent Residents and Naturalised Citizens from June 2 through 15, 2020.

“We are asking them not to go anywhere. I am asking all family members, “please let us not retard the progress that we have made,” he said while a guest on the ZBVI 780 AM 'Honestly Speaking' radio programme with host Claude O. Skelton-Cline on Tuesday, June 2, 2020.

Hon Fahie said, at the moment meetings are being had to ensure security is implemented to make sure persons remain indoors.

He continued: “Because we cannot afford to retard it, it is going to be too much money for us to shut back down our economy and to reboot the economy. It is cheaper to put the security around them [than] to have to pay for our economy to be rebooted after having to be shut down as a result of any kind of spread.”

People sacrificed

Premier Fahie then sought to remind persons that the people of the VI paid their dues.

“We spent a lot of our hard-earned tax money to be proactive. Remember that those of us here laboured through many curfew orders. We were angry at times, they were angry with the Premier, but I love them, and we did all of that to keep us safe right now. Thank God we have zero active confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and it is not by accident,” he remarked.

The Territory is now COVID-19 free but is still under a 7:00 pm to 5:00 am curfew.

But the economy is shut down as everywhere is closed by 6:30ish, so what was the point of opening hotels and putting an extran hour at 5am?

If the returnees are quarantined, the territory is COVID-19 free & they pass the 14 days without being positive, when can the numbers be increased from 50? After all, you’re saying we’re “free” & I understand there’s always a possibility, but, we need to get back to being a bit more regular. We need to be able to do more things...50 ain’t cutting it!!

It makes sense to open the hotels so that for people who cannot access a bedroom apartment can quarantine at a hotel, with a one bedroom.

Hon Premier, I am one of those who is with you ALL THE WAY. You are exercising much wisdom but Mr. Premier, we are hearing nothing about East End / Long Look sewage long overdue completion.

The Rep for EE/LL did indicate work would continue in June, this June, but please do not forget us. Now money seem to be free flying all over the place. After all is said and done we hope we can dance and have a festival before the end of this year for the completion of the project.

It is a shame that that Mr. Smurf talking now. He have very short memory but we will remind him that he is the cause that sewage problem still existing after he allow the MV to take our money and do what they think they were big enough to do. SO Mr. Smurf, please go sit down and fold your arms like you did before and let the VIP Govt roll on.

Got you, Sir but based on what happened the last time what guarantee does the public has that these people will comply with the quarantine period? I understand that these persons would be guarded and that you are trusting the judgment of family members to enforce the isolation period but because I do not legally incline I am just asking should persons who are quarantine be made public? This could be a deterrent to ensure that they stay put.
