CANE GARDEN BAY, Tortola, VI – “I hereby now declare and commend you to the churches and to the brethren everywhere…” These were the special words of Rev. Dr Melvin A. Turnbull, Senior Pastor of the Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church as he presided over the ordination of several members of his congregation yesterday, January 27, 2013.

Among those being conferred with new authority in the church were, Pastor Arvan Hodge, Pastor Ethlyn Rhymer, Pastor Rev. Dr Michael A. Turnbull, Minister Texford John, Minister Melvin M. Turnbull, Minister Shondrea N Turnbull, Evangelist Kelvin Scatliffe and Evangelist Ronald Wishart.

Rev. Dr Melvin A. Turnbull told the congregation, “whenever we have the opportunity to release such men and women of such calibre into our society, it can only be better, it can only be enhanced.” He then released them to God to do His work.

The ordained Ministers received certificates that allowed them to preside over weddings and other similar official ceremonies that other ordained Ministers around the Territory were qualified to perform.

They received the prayers and blessings of other Ministers from various churches around the Territory as they prepared to receive their certificates.

“It’s been a long journey for these candidates,” Rev. Dr Melvin A. Turnbull said, “I’ve had the distinct pleasure of working with them, not just yesterday, but for quite a while. We strongly believe that times are serious, we also understand the demands of Ministry and so we believe in not just conferring titles, but that each title is a function under-girded by preparation.”

He said that there were times that the candidates felt like giving up, but the church won’t let them give up and “God certainly kept them.”

The candidates were also each asked to give a brief testimony of their individual journey to salvation and how they came to find the love of God and how this love eventually led to Ministry in the Church.

Among the attendees at the ceremony were Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr The Hon. Kedrick D. Pickering, Minister for Health and Social Development Hon. Ronnie W. Skelton, At Large Representative Hon. Archibald C. Christian, Third District Representative Hon. Julian Fraser RA and First District Representative Hon. J. Alvin Christopher.

Congratulatory messages came from Governor William B. McCleary, Premier Dr The Hon. D. Orlando Smith and Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron V. Walwyn, among others.

Virgin Islanders needs to embrace Righteousness throughout its hierarchies. Then our joy will be restored.

How come all of a sudden every preacher is Dr. This or Dr. That? Where they get these doctor titles? I tell you, when somebody come to one of these Doctor with a sore foot or running belly they will stop. Seek not personal glory. Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven.
