‘Careless speech can affect social cohesion & economy’- Hon Walwyn

- urged youth parliamentarians to do their research before adding their voice to the chorus
Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn said part of the responsibility of young parliamentarians is to be prepared and ready to debate topical issues such as the National Health Insurance (NHI) but warned them that for the sake of social cohesion and the preservation of the economy, they must do their research in order to be on point with their position. “As young people your voices will be important on debates…such as on that of the National Health Insurance. [You can] utilise this forum to help us understand the importance of such a facility to protect the health of our nation or even to explore at this stage of our development whether such a programme is necessary,” Hon Walwyn charged. PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI - Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn said part of the responsibility of young parliamentarians is to be prepared and ready to debate topical issues such as the National Health Insurance (NHI) but warned them that, for the sake of social cohesion and the preservation of the economy, they must do their research in order to be on point with their position.

Speaking at the launch of the National Youth Parliament on Friday October 2, 2015 at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, Paraquita Bay, Honourable Walwyn warned the young people to be impeccable in their research or else risk joining those who speak carelessly on issues to the detriment of the society and the economy.

“Very often in the community, even among the territory's most popular commentators we hear people commenting on important matters affecting the country without adequately being seized of the facts," he said.

He said this misinformation is then repeated by some sections of the population who make decisions on their lives based on what they have heard.

The Minister urged the youth parliamentarians not to go this route but to “always do your research on the issue before adding your voice to the choir.”

You can help us understand important issues

“We have seen the results of how such careless speech could adversely affect our social cohesion and even our economy,” he said.

“As young people your voices will be important on debates…such as on that of the National Health Insurance. [You can] utilise this forum to help us understand the importance of such a facility to protect the health of our nation or even to explore at this stage of our development whether such a programme is necessary,” he charged.

The Minister said that the issue of pari-mutuel betting may become another topic for discussion. “I would be interested in hearing from you young people your perspective on this topic. These are issues that are also relevant to you young people and these are issues that I believe through this Youth Parliament we should allow the people of the territory to share their views regardless if they are for or against a particular subject,” he said.

YESSSS .... They needs to turn a deaf ear to that Uhuru guy... for a well known activist in our community ... I actually looked forward to hearing the explanation from Uhuru ... I believed him at first and went on to sign the Petition. Little did I know that there was the NHI breakdown booklet Circulating !!! When I got possession of it, is only then I fully knew the real NHI set up and coverage specifics !!!! So yes do your own research .. not only to young people,.... but older folks as well!!!!

He already believes he is MrPrimer. That would not happen anytime soon if the constitution is followed. Hope he is not being used on false promises. Some things are happening that we do not see in the constitution. But we will wait and see.
