Caller: Miss BVI 2012, not first to receive pearls
The pearls that were given to Ms. Sharie deCastro, Miss British Virgin Islands 2012, according to committee members, are expected to be passed down to other Queens to come and was also thought to be the first time something of that nature had been done.
According to the caller during the airing of the talk show which was aired on a local radio station on August 20, 2012, she said she was extremely happy about the jewellery given to Ms. deCastro to start the tradition, “but this is not the first time.”
She added that in 1975, when little Switzerland only sold fine china and crystals, the home of fine jewelry was another jewellery store over in St. Thomas.
She said herself and other committee members at the time used to go over to St. Thomas to make sure, that not only the Queen but the 1st runner up as well, were gifted a string of pearls and earrings.
“Young ladies should have a string of pearls and should be able to wear pearls… the girls from 1976, we left in 81… every Miss BVI had a string of pearls.”
She added that people in the Virgin Islands have a tendency, to say something happens for the first time, before consulting the past and making sure that it is indeed the first time.
The jewellery was presented to the recently crowned Miss BVI 2012, during a formal ceremony at the Little Switzerland store location in Road Town, August 16, 2012.
According to the Manager of Little Switzerland, Josiah Russel, the ‘heirloom’ piece is a symbol of success, hope and beginnings that Ms. deCastro and other future queens can wear while attending events and other beauty shows, representing the Virgin Islands.
