BEEF ISLAND, VI – They are said to be refurbished, however, the Oshkosh fire trucks recently acquired by the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) have put the Virgin Islands on par with the top rated Caribbean Countries in terms of being ready for an emergency.

This is according to Representative of Crash and Rescue Corporation, Dallas Texas, USA, Mr Jerry Sanchez.

It was the occasion of the commissioning of the three Oshkosh fire trucks at the fire station located at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, Beef Island on Friday October 18, 2013.

Mr Sanchez told stakeholders present that it should be a moment of pride knowing that the Virgin Islands is now at a stage with high ranking Caribbean countries. He complimented the team of firemen who were trained to effectively use and care the machines and said they have exhibited a very high level of knowledge and adaptation.

Chief Fire Officer of the BVIAA, Mr Lorrie George spent quality time explaining the significance of the acquisition of the machines. He also said the fire trucks will enhance the Anegada and Virgin Gorda locations.

“You know Anegada always say they don’t get nothing new, they would get 'hand me down' but they will now share the pride and joy and will not be having ‘Hand me down’,” said Mr George.

While noting the significance of the fire trucks, Mr George said the BVIAA is looking forward to having the fleet increase even further with the pending major expansion of the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport.

The fire tenders arrived in the Territory on Sunday, October 13, 2013 and were later transferred to the Beef Island Fire Station for the commissioning ceremony.

3 comments for good story. IF it was a story saying Airport closed because firetrucks not working, we would have 50. Thanks BVI. Keep up the good works.

the trucks are only as good as the emergency training fire fighters get. Otherwise, it is a waste of a new bright and shiny thing.

How much did they cost each? Is there room at the station to house the trucks since they have to be kept inside to protect the infrared sensors from the elements?
