BVI defeated by DR in final of ‘Battle of the Fittest’

- first time BVI has failed to win the championship

PHILIPSBURG, St Maarten, WI- BVI Bayside Blazers found the Dominican Republic a force too tough as they surrendered their title to their Spanish-speaking opponents in the final of the 6th annual ‘Battle of the Fittest’ Basketball Tournament in Philipsburg, St Maarten last night, July 20, 2019.

The star studded BVI squad lost 74-88 at a jam packed L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium. It was the second time losing to the Dominican Republic at this year’s tournament and the first time the BVI (3 titles) will not be returning with the championship trophy since they began participating.

The defeat came despite a heroic effort from killven M. Samuel who knocked down 26 points, pulled 7 rebounds and made 3 assists.

Adrian D. Joseph contributed 15 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and made 1 assist, also in a valiant but vain effort for BVI Bayside Blazers.

The Dominican Republic were led by MVP Hansel Salvador, who ended with 30 points and Michael Mendoza, who also netted 30 points.

BVI 2019 Team

The BVI 12 member team comprised team captain Jason A. Edwin, Killven M. Samuel, Kimani T. Stevens, Adrian D. Joseph, Dextroy D. Mamswell, Shamarr A. George, Daven D. Ottley, Melvin H. Haynes, Cleo D. Sears, Deon J. Edwin, Kleon C. Penn, and Dion M. Blyden.

The Head Coach was Ronald Simmons aka ‘Gola’, Assistant Coach Trevor M. Stevens aka 'West', Trainer Karl M. Scatliffe and Special Advisor/Scorer Eustace C. Freeman aka 'Boss'.

The team was managed by Hon Julian Willock and Assistant Manager Derrick R. Varlack.

    That game was sweet. We need to learn how to encourage rather than pull down. The team did well. We do not have to always win but winning feels good. We been on a streak and we still came second, not like we came last.
