ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – An employment unit within the Labour Department is currently operational and soon businesses will be asked to inform the department of their vacancies.

On NDP Radio last evening July 17, 2012, Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Hon. Dr. Kedrick Pickering disclosed that with the restructuring of the department, the employment unit is in operation but it will soon ask businesses to submit job vacancies to the department as well.

“… with the restructuring of the Labour Department, it is in operation and one of the things we are going to be asking of the businesses, is that probably at the same time they are advertising jobs and vacancies in the various media outlets, that the Labour department is also informed directly about the vacancies.”

He added that when the restructuring of the department is fully completed and they have the physical space in full operation, the Department would then re-double its efforts to ensure that whatever jobs are available in the country, they know about them and can then help to match individuals who are seeking employment in the specific areas.

Hon. Pickering noted that with the recent survey to gather the number of employed youths in the Territory, the Ministry of Education and the Labour Department promised to work together to find job placements for the youths. “This is by extension what we are working on.”

Meanwhile, Hon. Myron Walwyn, Minister for Education and Culture, who was also a guest on the programme, revealed efforts to continue to enhance the technical and vocational learning institutes in the Territory including finding ways to marry the Technical and Vocational Centre in Baughers Bay and the one at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College since he found that there were duplication of efforts.

Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith, who was the host of the talk show, said the efforts by the ministries show that Government recognizes that a lot of young people who go through the school system and have expectations and “rightful ones too that there must be opportunities for them. And what you are doing Education Minister...by improving on the technical aspect and Labour Minister is doing together, is a very good thing to do to make sure our young people are trained and then employed.”

I know for sure that this would put some or most of the trust companies in hot water, because them like to bring in people from overseas to fill position which can be filled by a local person, just that them don't like to pay people their money. This should have been in place long time ago, but also Labour Dept is a joke, I can't believe the old government and the new government allowed that Dept to be such a joke for such a long period of time. But Labour Dept we the public gonna be looking, listening and awaiting to see what would be done and for how long.
