PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI – A series of bushfires near the compound of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in Paraquita Bay, Tortola, had fire officers busy this afternoon April 9, 2015 as they fought to bring them under control.

Speaking to this news site, Chief Fire Officer Zebalon A. McLean confirmed that many small bushfires encompassed a large area close to the college.

“What the officer in charge told me is that it is an area very close to the college covering seven to eight acres, not all of which was on fire, but there were fires in that area. I haven’t got the details yet,” he said when contacted.

“Within an eight-acre area there were several small fires…but the men were able to get them under control,” said McLean.

It was only on March 30, 2015 that firefighters and public-spirited citizens had to join forces to battle a major fire that broke out at the derelict vehicle dump-site in the vicinity of Prince Bar in Valley, Virgin Gorda.

Persons have since reported that the fire may have been started by some children who were allegedly seen running from the scene of the fire following an explosion.

This was the report also of McLean even as he noted investigations are continuing. While regretting the incident and being very grateful to those who joined forces with his officers to bring the situation under control, Mr McLean said, "It is suspected that some children were in the area and may have caused the fire."
