Bring NHI draft policy to the people – Edmund Maduro

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Talk show host Edmund Maduro is adamant that residents of the Virgin Islands need to see copies of the proposed draft legislation for the National Health Insurance before it is made into law.

The host made this assertion on his BVI Forum TV show aired on March 2, 2013 on the CBN television station.

According to the host, any citizen of the Virgin Islands has the right to challenge any part of the proposed National Health Insurance Policy if that part infringes on their human rights as included in the constitution.

Though he supported the idea of the proposed policy, he felt there were a number of issues that must be addressed as well as a number of rights that must not be infringed upon.

Maduro offered that it would therefore be unwise for any elected representative, civil servant or government agency to believe that they can include in any national insurance legislation, any rules, laws or regulations that may be contrary to the contents of or are against the rights of the people as included in the constitution.

“I therefore call upon our elected representatives, to lay any such drafted legislation on any National Health Insurance scheme before the people,” Maduro said, “before they make such draft legislation into law.”

He reminded the audience that legislators were not dictators, but rather representatives of the people of the Virgin Islands.

The host stated that there were a number of persons who had their own individual and private medical insurance and would like to retain this, “this is why it is so important for you and I to get right now, a copy of the drafted legislation or a copy of the compiled recommendation that must go before the House [of Assembly],” he added.

Maduro felt it was the duty of the populace to ensure that legislators execute the introduction of the policy in the best interest of the people of the Virgin Islands. He explained that it was his right to ensure that legislators do not pass a law that he could not afford to maintain.

“What I’m saying to the good government and the civil servants [is] please bring that matter before the people, let the people look at it carefully, if it is in the best interest of the people that they have to make a super effort to put it through, [then] show the people that,” he expressed.

“Do not go like a bulldozer, do not go like a dictator…” the talk show host stressed, “this is a democratic country, let us deal with the National Health Insurance in a democratic way.”

    It doesn't happen often, but this time I completely agree with Mr. Maduro.

    I am furious about this whole NHI plan and have even considered relocating to another country because of it. If I am going to live in a socialist country, then I may choose to live in a socialist country that actually offers benefits to do so ~ not some third world, wannabe country that can't even supply water to the people and whose politicians insist upon steamrolling over the people and forcing things (that many of us don't want) down our throats with all their "DONE DEALS!

    Our son is going to school in Canada. The same school my parents sent me to when I was his age. We own property there as well. It is not beyond reason to relocate my 5th generation BVI family there. At least Canada has an excellent water supply, excellent roads, excellent education system and excellent health care! I want some bang for my buck and if I am going to be made to pay through the nose for some socialistic healthcare plan, when the plan I already have is perfectly functional for me, my staff and my family. If I have to leave home permanently or temporarily, then that is an option I must seriously consider. Not thrilled at the prospect of snow, but every place has it's drawbacks.

    I will be awaiting the announcement from government outlining the NHI costs. This could very well be the straw that breaks the camels back for me. I have had enough.
