ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - In an interview with OnStage TV show’s host Mr Winford Williams, king of Dance Hall Anthony Moses Davis, better known as Beenie Man, said he had decided to announce in the Virgin Islands that he was infected with the Zika virus because he would not have been the only person with the infection in the territory.

The interview can be found on social media Youtube.

Beenie Man during his performance at the Rita Francis Festiville on July 29, 2016 admitted that he was infected with the Zika virus, saying despite his condition, he gave every effort to show up and perform.

Many persons had expressed disappointment that the dancehall artist was allowed to perform in the VI despite being infected.

Beenie did not tell Bermuda officials he was infected

But in the Youtube video, Beenie Man said he had performed in Bermuda a couple of days before while infected with Zika but he did not tell officials there because he would have been regarded as “patient zero".

According to research, the index case, primary case, or patient zero is the initial patient in the population of an epidemiological investigation, or more generally, the first case of a condition or syndrome (not necessarily contagious) to be described in the medical literature, whether or not the patient is thought to be the first person affected.

‘I was not patient zero in Tortola’

Once in the VI, Beenie Man said he started feeling a little better than when he was in Bermuda and that he decided to declare that he had the virus because he could not be patient zero since the virus was already in the territory.

“I reached and I told them because I am not patient zero in Tortola. They actually are dealing with it,” Beenie Man said, claiming that there were already Zika cases in the territory before he came.

Mr Williams did ask the artist if he had informed officials at the port of entry in the VI, however, Beenie Man did not directly address that question but rather continued to insist that he was not patient zero on Tortola.

It was only on August 24, 2016, however, that the Ministry of Health and Social Development confirmed five cases of the Zika virus in the Virgin Islands.

Concerning the photo that appeared on Beenie Man’s Facebook page prior to performing on Tortola, the artist said it was taken before arriving in the Virgin Islands and admitted that had those photos been published before the Virgin Islands would not have “received” him.

The photo was posted afterwards on Instagram and on his Facebook page and the artist was not granted permission to enter Canada to perform at Caribana as was scheduled.

I don't understand why ppl are acting as though the virus is communicable through simple contact. The virus is spread by mosquitos so whether he had it or not when he came is irrelevant. One of my very friends had the virus earlier in the year before he came so yes he is NOT patient 0, and secondly, the virus was full bloom in st Thomas and we come and go from st Thomas on a daily basis, why is that not being highlighted? We need to turn to the medical board and the government to ask why it was being covered up that zika was in the BVI when the first diagnosis was made....why did they wait until an outbreak to now say oh yea by the way, we have a zika problem.

If your friend didnt see the doctor and report she had zika then her "word" for is not sufficient. We in the BVI just like Beenie. We like to stay home sick and self diagnose then say the Government covering up... If it is not documented then it didnt happen!!

BVI will remain in denial and unable to cope with reality until the truth is shared and action taken to compensate our fellow citizens.
It has to be done our helath is first.
