ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Bars and nightclubs in the Virgin Islands (VI) will finally be re-opening since an August 21, 2020, closure as a result of a then spike in COVID-19 cases.

For these categories of businesses to serve the public; however, a number of protocols would have to be met, Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) announced in a COVID-19 update yesterday afternoon, October 7, 2020.

Businesses must pass inspection – Hon Malone

“Cabinet decided to allow all business to re-open, inclusive of bars and nightclubs, provided that those businesses pass inspection by the Social Distancing Monitoring Protocols and are certified by the Environmental Health Division in order to operate their businesses,” he said.

The Minister said, specifically, bars and nightclubs owners were also currently in conversations with the Department where a date and time for inspections would be agreed.

“Cabinet decided to allow freight couriers and charter companies travelling between the BVI and USVI to operate, subject to strict adherence to the established COVID-19 suppression measures and bi-weekly COVID-19 anaysis.”

The Minister said that as the administration continues its mission to safely reopen the VI, all 43 members of the Social Distancing Monitoring Task Force operating within the Environmental Health Division are now fully trained, equipped, commissioned and deployed to perform very important duties.

Business must implement effective measures

Those duties, he said, include educating, monitoring and enforcement of the public health measures alongside the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

“Simple but; effective protective measures such as physical distancing, hand washing, sanitisation, and wearing of face coverings while in public places apply to individuals, businesses and other establishments, and there are legal penalties in place to promote full compliance.”

Bars and nightclubs approved to open their doors would have to close their businesses between 12:00 pm and 05:00 am in accordance with a new 14-day curfew, effective October 8, 2020.

See you all back under curfew in 6 weeks. Because two things are evident about 80 percent of the people in the BVI. They do not learn from the past and are simple minded and child like in their mentality...

Exactly! Many of them disobeyed the government orders and still opened and were serving alcohol. My friend and I went to collect our take out order from a recently opened business in town and were surprised to see them serving alcohol without a liquor license. My friend works in a certain government department and so she decided to ask the cashier why they were serving alcohol....her reply was that their boss instructed them to sell alcohol SMH

You will talk about the local spots but what about the brewery and others that open when they want and totally ignore social distancing? Once the pink expats hang out anywhere it's fine because they are networking. When the locals to the same it's breaking the law and looking for spanish women.

Where did you see Robocop mention the word local. Stop grasping at straws. Sounds like you guilty.

All we have to do is secure the boarders.
Covid 19 might linger for a while so its all about protecting the borders and testing tourist when the borders actually reopens. What happen if someone sells alcohol to go. as long as they social distancing its alright.
lots of people cant see a pay check since this covid 19. Not only the expatriates but locals as well.
So much people still waiting on stimulus checks. that was a very slow process indeed.
The government just have to ensure that the members of the social distancing task force inforce that all bars and clubs do a temperature test before entering as well as sanitizing.

I dont understand why selling rum is so important during covid and not during covid. Rum destroys families, incites violence and ruin lives. So much Virgin Islanders, especially our forefathers died from the bottle. Remember rum was a way to wash away the sorrows of a colonial error. Lively up your mind through natural meditation, love for your God and fellow man and good eating. Keep the drunken houses shut down and let the rum heads spend quality time with their kids and wives.

Please a lot of these bars BEEN open during the last set of curfews, it's just that they slick with it. They close their doors to make it seem as if they not open but closer inspection showed they had customers inside for hoursssss past the curfew drinking, music playing, big screen playing & everybody having a grand old time
