ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- With classes set to begin on Monday January 30, 2017 young entrepreneur and former Miss British Virgin Islands Sharie B.Y. de Castro continues to champion the cause of literacy in the territory through her business Write To Read.

Ms de Castro explained that she has encountered students at both the elementary and secondary levels who have had major difficulties with reading and comprehension.

"That is why Write To Read's mission is 'Building a nation of readers,' and our vision is helping individuals to achieve academic excellence through literacy," said de Castro. The young entrepreneur further explained that children learn differently so they must be taught differently.

Ms de Castro, a former teacher of English at Elmore Stoutt High School, passionately stated, "The problem is, I have had students that were so low in reading, so academically deficient that I cried. I have asked myself, how do I raise the self-esteem of a child and his/her academic development at the same time?" She answered by highlighting the value of positive teacher/student relationships, motivation and creating a learning environment that caters to the learning styles of all children.

Literacy intervention plan

Classes begin next week with Reading, Language Skills and Writing Placement Assessment sessions. Ms de Castro explained, "The aim is to show whether children are reading and writing below, at or above their expected levels. The screenings will highlight areas of strength and weakness and a detailed intervention plan will be created for each child to address their individual needs."

Ms de Castro expressed that children exhibit one or more learning styles: Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic (hands on), Logical, Verbal, Solitary or Social. "They ask let me see, let me hear, let me try, tell me why, let me tell you why, can I work alone or can I work in a group," the educator further stated.

The programme caters to children ages 5 - 16 and classes are held two days a week, on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday, from 4:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M., 5:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M. or 6:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M.

Limited spaces are available and interested persons can call 442-7335 or email writetoreadbvi@gmail.com for further details and registration.

A special thank you was expressed to The Lions Club of Tortola and Caribbean Security Limited for sponsoring the Placement Assessment Sessions for 40 children who sign up for the Write To Read After-school Programme.

was thinking the same thing. I also hope there is a bigger push to get the library up and running. It is true that children can learn differently and the biggest hindrance to their self-worth is how they are encouraged and treated.
Don't let self-esteem crush the spirit. Every child is valuable. Some are good with their hands too. Congratulations Sharie. Make learning fun and work with parents so they don't discourage the children at home just because they have issues with education themselves.

Teachers are Molders and Sharpers of the MINDS of our society.

Teachers are Edifiers- Inspiring and Motivating our young future leaders and citizens of our country into becoming productive and exemplary contributors to our society.

Good teachers tap into students’ minds they teach to unleash their greatest potential and make them better than they expected of themselves- against any odds (bad parenting, media, tv, peer-pressure, etc.)

The Quest of Good Teachers- Caring for Better Outcomes.

Plant the Seeds of: Reading - Reading – Reading- "and what children read as well." In Particular, it is of unquestionable importance for our children to learn about who we/they are - as strong, powerful, and intelligent human beings on Earth – And who we were/are - as Original People and Producers of ALL civilizations and systems established today - before physical and mental slavery- The Architects- who laid-out the BluePrints: for Languages and the Written Words, Mathematics and Sciences, etc.)

Reading Helps to Build Strong Fundamental Critical Thinking Skills for their future outlooks. And what they Read- Builds a Strong Sense and Innerstanding of Self in a complex world.

My family of nine (9) just LOVE this young lady and her brilliant forward-thinking mind. There is still Hope in Our Virgin Islands.

I am so happy to see this! Everyone is always complaining about the youths not doing well in school, yet no one has opened up something like this to help them. I am so happy to see that this young lady is doing so well. She is demonstrating love for the country and true leadership skills! Please put this lady up as a major player in VIP, and you have won me over! Sharie stay humbled and keep demonstrating your leadership potential! You got this! One more thing, can you please open this institute on the sister islands, especially VG? Don't forget them; the kids have true potential over there as well!
