‘A COI is the best way to clear your name’ – Hon J. Alvin Christopher

He was speaking during the continuation of the Eighth Sitting of the Third Session of the Second House of Assembly on Monday August 11, 2014 while the House debated the Public Accounts Committee's (PAC) final report on the cruise pier project.
“If you haven’t done anything, Madam Speaker, in my opinion the best way to set the record straight and make sure that in the future nobody would have your name on the internet or anywhere saying that you’re this or you’re that,” said Hon Christopher.
“Madam Speaker, one of the main reasons I was recommending that we have this matter discussed at a different level and do it early was from my experience as Minister in extending the cruise ship pier,” he said, noting that he became Minister for Communications and Works in February of 1995.
“Madam Speaker, most members may not know, I found myself in the same position that the Minister [Hon Vanterpool] is in. And Madam Speaker, what freed my name [was a Commission of Inquiry],” he said.
“A Commission of Inquiry was done on that cruise ship dock with me as Minister and today you never hear anyone accuse me of doing anything illegal on that pier because that Commission of Inquiry cleared my name,” he said.
Hon Christopher said that he had also wanted a Commission of Inquiry on the Beef Island bridge because of the talk that still circulates about his building the “most expensive bridge in the world.”
To Minister Vanterpool, Hon Christopher asked, “If you are saying to the people of this Territory the cruise ship development project is good for you, why are you afraid to clear your name and allow this to happen?”
“If you haven’t done anything Madam Speaker in my opinion it is the best way of setting the record straight and making sure that in the future nobody would have your name over any internet or anything saying that you’re corrupt,” said Hon Christopher.
