ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Representative for the Second District Honourable J. Alvin Christopher believes that a Commission of Inquiry (COI) will go a far way in removing any doubt that Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool (R4) was not involved in any wrongdoing with regards to the cruise pier project.

He was speaking during the continuation of the Eighth Sitting of the Third Session of the Second House of Assembly on Monday August 11, 2014 while the House debated the Public Accounts Committee's (PAC) final report on the cruise pier project.

“If you haven’t done anything, Madam Speaker, in my opinion the best way to set the record straight and make sure that in the future nobody would have your name on the internet or anywhere saying that you’re this or you’re that,” said Hon Christopher.

“Madam Speaker, one of the main reasons I was recommending that we have this matter discussed at a different level and do it early was from my experience as Minister in extending the cruise ship pier,” he said, noting that he became Minister for Communications and Works in February of 1995.

“Madam Speaker, most members may not know, I found myself in the same position that the Minister [Hon Vanterpool] is in. And Madam Speaker, what freed my name [was a Commission of Inquiry],” he said.

“A Commission of Inquiry was done on that cruise ship dock with me as Minister and today you never hear anyone accuse me of doing anything illegal on that pier because that Commission of Inquiry cleared my name,” he said.

Hon Christopher said that he had also wanted a Commission of Inquiry on the Beef Island bridge because of the talk that still circulates about his building the “most expensive bridge in the world.”

To Minister Vanterpool, Hon Christopher asked, “If you are saying to the people of this Territory the cruise ship development project is good for you, why are you afraid to clear your name and allow this to happen?”

“If you haven’t done anything Madam Speaker in my opinion it is the best way of setting the record straight and making sure that in the future nobody would have your name over any internet or anything saying that you’re corrupt,” said Hon Christopher.

For these guys to think that we believe they're fighting for the country, they got to be kidding. The opposition is playing pure politics with this one as elections are right around the corner. The projects had some issues in the beginning that could have been dealt with in an adult manner rather than all this ranting and carrying on. Pull the file on these guys and tell me if they're working for country or for themselves. People don't change their ways overnight and I'm not buying this rubbish. Alvin you and PEP will go POP come election because that's going nowhere, trust me.

Clearly you are not for the people of the BVI. If you were, instead of trying to deflate a person or party! You would use common sense to try to understand the dynamics of the situation. It is immature people like you that have tax payers money being flushed in the toilet! Stop trying to defend a party be Diplomatic! If you don't know the words I've used sit down and take up a dictionary and expand the nut into a full functioning brain.!

I do not understand why NDP would not submit to a commission of enquiry. I would like to see them clear their names through such a process. It seems to me that if they don't have anything to hide, that they themselves would want to have their names to be cleared as well, considering the amount of allegations hanging over their heads right now. They themselves have admitted to certain of the allegations that at times they did not follow the proper procedures, stating that they were necessary to expedite matters. One thing I don't understand is how a contract for $70 million dollars could be handed to a company without proper tendering procedures. That is definitely over the limit and raises questions about the other concerns.
