68 HMP inmates receive group counselling
The rehab programme saw some nineteen (19) participants in the first ever Anger Management Programme and 22 inmates for the House of Healing Programme, which is in its third year.
The closing ceremony for the various programmes was held yesterday, September 17, 2013 at Her Majesty’s Prison where it was revealed that Edwards Consulting Firm is working a total rehabilitation programme to inmates at Her Majesty Prison.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture, Dr Marcia Potter, in giving remarks on behalf of Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn, said rehabilitative works are the foundation level.
“I also wish to take the opportunity to thank them (Edwards Consulting) for the work they have been doing for just over a month now to help us ensure that the necessary systems are in place as well as training for the effective running of the institution,” she said.
It was re-iterated in Hon. Minister’s remarks as read by Dr Potter that it has always been his intention to have rehabilitation become the main focus of HMP. “This will continue to be my mantra as we must institute such programmes to help the prison population become ready to re-engage in society and to avoid re-offending.”
It was also said that the rehabilitation programme must be used as an opportunity and another chance to reach young people, especially young men and get them on the right path.
“Promoting self-esteem; fostering emotional and spiritual growth and encouraging responsibility and accountability in one’s self and others as well as providing inmates with the self awareness, problem solving skills, and strategies necessary for recognizing and controlling angry feeling that could lead to violence and critical for their success on leaving this institution,” said Hon. Walwyn in his remarks as delivered by Dr Potter.
Superintendent of Prisons (Ag.), Mr Charles L. Forbes said yesterday’s activity closes another chapter in the history of the HMP’s rehabilitation process, which has been implemented to help the men and women who were committed to the prison through the courts.
Mr Forbes quote a famous writers as saying, "Man only likes to count his troubles but he does not count his joys" and pointed out that the closing ceremony must be seen as counting the joys of the inmates who saw it fit to volunteer to be a part of the process.
"They have successfully completed the House's of Healing and Anger Management programmes... It is our hope that these courses will help the inmates to strive to become model prisoners while incarcerated and healthy productive citizens when they depart from the institution and reintegrate into society."
According to Mr Forbes, the achievements and accomplishments being celebrated is a show of how proud family, relatives, friends, HMP and society are proud of them.
