WICKHAM’S CAY, Tortola, VI – The Moorings Mariner Inn Hall was filled to its capacity last night April 22, 2014 with persons from across the wide spans of the Territory all 'dressed up' as they joined the St. George’s School – Primary Division Fund Raising Committee in honouring six churches for their investment in the education system.

It was an occasion that was not missed by the Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith who in brief remarks urged that ‘Roses’ be given. Also present was Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn who acknowledged the importance of Government supporting private schools in the education system.

It was a white carpet night that was themed, ‘Faith + Education = Excellence’ and was one that honoured six churches that have been leading from the front in education in the Virgin Islands from as far back as the late 1700s.

Those who were showered with gratitude and plaques of honour were the BVI Methodist Church Circuit, received by Charles A. Seaton, Agape Tortola Life Centre – Dr. Lucia C. Woods, New Testament Church of God International Worship Centre - Bishop Ishmael Charles, BVI Seventh-day Adventist Church – Pastor Halford Brown, New Life Baptist Church – Bishop John I. Cline and the St. George’s Episcopal (Anglican) Church – Father Ronald Branche.

The featured guest Speaker of the night was President of William Seymour College, Washington, D.C. Dr. Estrelda Y. Alexander. Concise in every way, her message was also an all inclusive one speaking to leaders, the church, teachers, parents and students.

Dinner was one of dubbed ‘excellent’ by most in attendance and labeled as a great initiative to raise funds for the school.

President of the School’s Fund Raising Committee and Chairperson for the night’s proceedings Ms Karia J. Christopher made it abundantly clear that the selection of churches for the first of such an award was in no way done to show disrespect to any of the other churches which were not selected.

She told the audience that it was their first of such events to come. She said too that they started out with zero dollars and had a really hard go at raising funds to ensure that it was the success it turned out to be.

This is beautiful and what God above intended for his people. One God, One People, One faith. Let us continue to find ways to celebrate those things we have in common and look for the good in each religious institution. May God continue to bless these religious institution that work to educate our children and instill good moral behavior in our children.

I ask that we also find a way to protect our children from pedophiles. This is work the church can take on, start with very stiff legal penalties and a support network by trained professionals for the victims.
