TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- Four nationals of the Dominican Republic are in police custody after a firearm was reportedly found at their home in Trellis Bay yesterday July 1, 2015.

According to information reaching Virgin Islands News Online, ‎Almoonte Moisis, 31, Edgar Ovalles, 21, Alberto Ovalles, 42, and Francisco Ovalles have been charged for possession of firearm and ammunition.

This news site was informed by sources close to the situation that ranks of the Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), operating on a tip off, had secured a warrent and conducted a search of the men's home where a Mossberg rifle and a quantity of ammunition were discovered.

Three of the men are said to be brothers and the fourth a cousin.

A response to our inquiries from the RVIPF's Public Relations Unit was not received up to the time of publication.

Only yesterday, July 1, 2015, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) announced a Firearm and Prohibited Weapons Amnesty for the month of July, with the amended Firearms and Air Gun Act 2015 now enacted,

The RVIPF hopes that persons during the month-long campaign will use the opportunity, in light of the increased prison terms, to turn over all illegal or prohibited weapons in their possession to Police.

It is only fair to send them back home whether they are belongers or not. There is enough space in their country now that the a great majority had to return to Haiti. If the table is to be turn over now they will say we are against them but crime is crime and we have to save the BVI too

They were going to turn in the guns under the amnesty programme. Them police gone to the people them house too soon. They have a whole month. That is their defence.

    Charges dropped against two

In court today, prosecutor Garcia Kelly gave notice that the prosecution will not be pursuing charges against Francisco Ovalles and Alberto Ovalles based on certain admissions made.

They were then ordered released from custody. from all of them I know Alberto and Francisco, they are good guys.
