ROAD HARBOUR, Tortola, VI- On Saturday, April 20, 2024, the Royal British Virgin Islands Yacht Club (RBVIYC) hosted the 2024 Governor's Cup. The forecast wasn’t hopeful with less that 10 knots forecast; however, the wind came in above forecast, which allowed for three very exciting races to take place.

There were a total of 9 boats out, 8 of which were in the Multihull class, which made an impressive sight on the start line off Slaney Point.

All in all about 42 sailors were out enjoying the racing in the morning.

Lucky 7

According to the RBVIYC, race one was a short windward leeward course leaving “Hog Valley Green” to port and it really put the sailors to the test. There were challenges when heading upwind with puffs of wind coming off the land. However, this just made it more interesting with a game of snakes and ladders occurring throughout the morning. The upwind challenges were met in equal parts in the downwind with some boats having issues with their spinnakers. It was a thoroughly challenging race for sailors.

By the finish, Eddie Brockbank with the crew from Lucky 7 pipped Chris Haycraft and his crew in Ting II by 21 seconds on corrected time. They were closely followed by Samuel C. Talbot, who claimed 3rd place in Trike.

Airgasm

During the start of the second race, the competitors pushed hard on the start line. This led to two boats being “on course side” at the go gun. The boats then settled down to an hour-long windward leeward once more. The best start for this race has to go to Henry Leonng in Whoop Whoop, who sent his tri across the start line like a bullet.

The course was the same as race one, but it was elongated and had two laps. Barney Crook in Airgasm took 1st in race two, Trike was second and Lucky 7 took third.

Airgasm twice!

The third race again had an on-course side start this time for Eddie Brockbank in lucky 7, which would have been a costly mistake. Shortly after the start, the wind died slightly which meant those that went in left towards Road Harbour benefitted greatly on their way to “Hog Valley Red” this time. With the wind shifting to come over the land, the game of snakes and ladders became all more important.

When the dust settled, Barney in Airgasm took 1st but had a run for his money by Andrew Thomson in a Hobie 18 who achieved 2nd place. Gilbo Simpson and his team in The Flying Pig, after some refreshments, achieved third place in the final race.

Libertas, with Kevin Wrigley and team, came out for competition; however, no other monohull was up for the challenge.

Over all standings:

Monohull:

1st Libertas

Multihull:

1st Airgasm

2nd Lucky 7

3rd Trike

4th Whoop Whoop

5th Ting II

6th Hobie 18

7th The Flying Pig

8th Triple Jack

The Governor's Cup race was Sat. 20 April and VINO publishes this article and the results on Tues. 30 April. Perhaps the race reporters got lost for a week or so which delayed publication of this sailing event. Nevertheless this race story was finally accurately published today.
