WICKHAM’S CAY II, Tortola, VI - The National Democratic Party (NDP 1) has conceded their defeat at the February 25, 2019 polls against the Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) led Virgin Islands Party (VIP) in the Virgin Islands (VI).

While the NDP Chairman Myron V. Walwyn has committed to being visible and supporting his colleagues, Opposition Leader, Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) extended an olive branch to the VIP government during the NDP’s first press conference yesterday Friday, March 1, 2019.

In extending gratitude to party supporters, Hon Penn assured, “We are down but we are not out. We are well on our way... we will rebuild our organisation stronger [and] better, we will focus as we have always done on the people of this territory.”

Divisiveness

Hon Penn—who has experienced a third cycle of election campaign—successively described the 2019 general election campaign as “the worse”.

“The level of divisiveness that took place is something that I think all of us need to pray about and ensure that it never happens again in this territory.” He said that one of the greatest challenge for him during the process was the difficult fact that he had to be running against a family member.

“I want to reach out to that family… I think that we have to mend our family. This election has put a strain on our family relationships and I think it’s very unfortunate that politics came in the way.”

Olive branch extended

Further, Hon Penn promised to not just be an Opposition Leader who opposes for opposing sake, rather, he is willing to work with the government, “If the government is doing things that are good and I think we can help, I think that we need to work together especially considering many of the members of the Government are new.”

“Many of them don’t understand the processes, so we have to work together to ensure that we get the best possible outcome for our country…and if they are doing things that are wrong I am going to hold their feet to the fire,” he implored.

Touching on Brexit and the issue of Economic Substance, Hon Penn said, “So I am reaching out the olive branch to the premier to ensure that we get together very early on these critical issues so that we could work together to develop a strategy.”

    Hon. Marlon,
    Many questioned
the wrong doings about the NDP government left unanswered- for a long time.!..only now your silence has been broken...The people saw you fit to give you another 4years...be grateful. However your party has lost a great deal of Its supporters due to the breaking up ....Its going to be a long time before NDP regain the TRUST of the people. We were hoping that Dancia would be on the VIP ticket, to strengthen the team..we hope that she will help for the benefit of the country.Furthermore, our territory is a Democratic system and not a Dictatorship system.

non of the former 11 have enough balls to speak on the urgent matter of unaccountablity: the NDP were removed from electoral office simply because of gross mismanagement the people’s taxes: it was nothing personal, so stop dancing around the subject and making lame excuses for your deplorable conduct(millions gone out the window)....

Very well said. I'm sure had Dancia team up with VIP and run in the 8th, he would not be there talking this nonsence.

The most divisive politician was his leader, stooping as low as he did, using his reverse psychology thinking we BVI people were stupid, insulting our intelligence to the lowest degree. I can never, ever put my hand to vote NDP ever as long as this man is part of it. I believe he owes the whole BVI an apology both on radio and face book as his follower requested from someone else.

Who Jah Bless! No man curse! A set hatters been hating for the past 8yrs and will continue to hate for another 4.

Hon. Penn, I welcome your generosity to assist the government by extending the olive branch to the VIP. However, I must let you know that you it is your party that created the gulf in the territory, especially your leader. Your party's campaign was very nasty because you were very confident of winning the election. In your presentation to you constituency you told them the other parties were talking FOOLISH NESS. Those spoken words shows that you did not have any respect for others. That is why the electorates punish the NDP.

It shows clearly that it is worthwhile to bridle your tongue and humble your self. Such condescending remarks do not thrive well in politics. Hon Fahie and his team stuck to the issues and fought a clean campaign. The mismanagement of the government's money cannot be swept under the rug and that is the cause of the NDP loss at the polls. It would be worth mentioning when the NDP chairman tried to distance himself from Dr Smith's administration in order to look good. The voters did not buy it, thus resulting in the defeat. Whatever happened while he was in Dr Smith's cabinet is a clear indication that he too condoned it.,

“The National Democratic Party (NDP 1) has conceded their defeat at the February 25, 2019 polls against the Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) led Virgin Islands Party (VIP) in the Virgin Islands (VI).” Voters went to polls on 25 February and results were released the early evening. Today is 02 March and the NDP is just conceding. Did NDP had serious doubts about the outcome? Was it contemplating filing a challenge? Hopefully, by now Myron V. Walwyn, NDP Chairman, has ringed Premier A. Fahie and congratulated him on the VIP victory.

We obviously know who he is why he was re-elected. If we had to go off the perception you VIP created about him, he wouldn't have gotten 1 vote.

So go take a seat from trying to defame the man good name.

I live in one of the districts that sadly has an NDP representative for another four year term. That person ignored half of their constituency for most of their past terms in office, and no doubt will do it again. The district looks run down, and it smells bad. It does not take a rocket scientist to see that it is in need of strong and committed leadership.
Will we get proper representation this time around? Only God in heaven knows.
We deserve much more than this.

You guys hate smurf this much! That you fabricate your own information? The district have challenges but to suggest nothing happen? Really!?

The elections is over and you won just chill and run the country.

“He said that one of the greatest challenge for him during the process was the difficult fact that he had to be running against a family member.” The BVI is a small community of some 30,000+ people so it highly that many people will be related by blood, marriage.........etc. Each family member is entitled to his or political opinion. Nonetheless, family members need to get together and discuss issues and not let differing views air in public. During this last election, family competing against family was evident in D-9, D-4, D-8, and D-1(?); there may be others. Uncle and nephew competing against each other with a dose of cousin is a royal, hot mess. Family running against each other split the vote, opening up the lane for others for a clear path to victory.

I found the comment odd. Didn't he run against Dancia? Isn't she also a family member? Where is the beef? Trying to generate some sympathy?

That's a strange comment, why would the winner of the race by such a large margin be looking symphathy? He could have moved on and said nothing. You comment is baffling to me.

The comments below this article are a clear depiction of why this country lags behind. Crabs in a barrel. We live in a democratic society. The populace decides who makes up the government. That being said; it was US who put whoever we put in power over any period of time. Instead of spewing venom and lashing out we need to read and learn our legislation. Figure out what our role is in the decision making process here on out. Figure out which legislation is missing. Stop with this type of behavior for the sake of the future of this territory I am begging y’all!!! The leader of the opposition has the right idea. Please allow him to do his job and you all go and figure out what yours is. For God in Heaven’s sake.
