2 dogs die after allegedly eating poisoned meat on Tortola
The caller to our newsroom pointed us to a BVI Community Board’s (Facebook) post to verify their reports.
According to the source the alleged acts were inhumane and should be discouraged.
“Two dogs dead this morning from poisoning in the Mt Healthy/Brewer's area. At least three piles of poisoned meat were placed with 6 inches of the public road. One pile was on the public road where I walk my dogs. I was walking with two dogs this morning as I do almost every morning. I keep my dog on a leash. Not bothering anyone. Both ingested poison. One died. We don't have a stray animal problem in this area, so I have to believe this is just the work of a future serial killer. Lock your doors, Tortola!” a post on Facebook by a Stacey Olson on January 13, 2018 stated.
Efforts to reach Ms Olson; however, proved futile.
Police Information Officer Diane L. Drayton also did not respond to our queries on the reports at the time of publication.
Last week our newsroom received reports and calls about cats and chickens being poisoned in Luck Hill on the main island of Tortola. Earlier this week we also got calls and photos about chickens and cats being poisoned in Baughers Bay.
Poisoning of animals an ongoing issue
It was in April 2017 that this news site had reported that chickens and cats were being poisoned in the area of Baughers Bay. Persons had also expressed concern that there are residential homes in the area with young children who play outside.
One parent was concerned if children were to touch the poison and it ended up in their mouths what possible effects it could have.
When asked if the cats and chickens were stray animals, we were told many of them were privately owned.
It was June 2016 that Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr The Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering (R7) announced in the House of Assembly a strategic Feral Animal Control Management Plan to target roaming cattle, stray dogs, wild cats and chickens.
It is unclear whether the latest poisoning of animals on Tortola had anything to do with the Feral Animal Control Management Plan.
