FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI — Two vehicular accidents on St Croix, US Virgin Islands on Sunday October 16, 2016 have left two people dead and at least 6 others injured, [US] Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) Public Information Officer Glen Dratte confirmed to The Consortium this morning, October 17, 2016.

According to Mr Dratte, citing 911, the first incident occurred at about 6:30 P.M. on the westbound lane of the Melvin Evans Highway. According to an EMT source on the scene, who spoke to The Consortium on the condition of anonymity, the vehicle coming from west was attempting to swing right to take the back road that leads to the Limetree Bay Oil Terminals (formerly HOVENSA), when it collided with a small SUV. The impact was so powerful that the vehicles wound up crashing into the fence of the old HOVENSA training school building.

Seven victims occupied the small, black SUV, while a female, who expired on the scene, occupied a car. St Croix Rescue personnel were also on the scene as its volunteers and employees aided in removing the female victim from the car. Earlier reports from the VIPD stated that five males had occupied the black SUV.

The victim of the highway accident has not been identified by police; Mr Dratte said the V.I.P.D. was awaiting next of kin notification. She was 88, however.

Estate Glynn fatal accident

Meanwhile, at an intersection near the Estate Glynn cockpit, police responded to another vehicular accident that occurred at about 8:02 P.M. the same night. According to 911 personnel, two individuals were found on the ground, with one of the two pronounced dead on the scene by emergency personnel.

A police unit on the scene said that 3 people needed medical attention, according to Mr Dratte, citing information provided by 911, all of whom were transported by ambulance to the hospital.

The victim of the Estate Glynn accident has been identified as Lenus Cammie, 34.

Inside the hospital’s emergency room was a scene of grief, as family members were visibly anguished by the tragic outcomes of the accidents. Outside was no different. Family and friends consoled themselves in various corners, and some stood by vehicles talking about the occurrences. One lady could be seen by herself, with her left hand on her forehead as she spoke to someone on a cellphone.

Police Commissioner Delroy Richards told this publication both last night and this morning that he was gathering more information about the incidents and would share details once more become available.
