12 year old Cedar Intl student accepted into Johns Hopkins course
“She earned a place in the top 40 percentile in the world at the Johns Hopkins University’ Talented Youth Centre so she has been assigned to this programme over the summer which she will be attending,” said her mom Susie Wong in an interview with this news site yesterday June 26, 2015.
According to the mother, the programme costs come up to around $8,000, some of which has had to come out of pocket.
She said her daughter had applied for funding through the Emerging Fellows Award programme but her application was not successful.
“Overall she has always been an excellent student. From primary she was the top student of the territory and then she was awarded a financial aid scholarship at the CEDAR International. From there she has been the top student in her class and the teachers there actually introduced her to the programme at Johns Hopkins University. So we are really looking forward to it,” said Wong.
She said that when Shakima was tested she was only in grade 7 and she was tested at the grade 12 level. “She has just always been outstanding in her academic and musical performance. She has also entered in the Top 7 @ 7 award show and she was chosen to be in the final 7 which will be sometime next month,” said Ms Wong.
“So she is a very talented young woman, she plays several instruments, she writes her own songs and academically she is doing really well,” said Wong.
As a debater the course drew me in - Shakima A. Fagan
“The programme I will be attending is a three week course entitled Logic: Principles of Reasoning. We will be studying the basic of deductive and argumentative logic which is a type of reasoning that you will have to use in many careers such as a mathematician or doctor or lawyer,” Shakima A. Fagan told this news site.
“I myself being a debater that specific course really drew me in. we had a range of courses to choose from and I was eligible more for English and Humanities and that was the course that I chose,” she said.
Fagan added that in terms of raising funds for the application the process was a long one. She noted that depending on how well one did on the test, one could apply for the course one was eligible for. “But then you would have to pay all of the expenses that come along with travelling to the US. It came up to over $8,000,” she said.
She said one of the reasons she might not have been successful with the Emerging Fellows Award might have been her age.
Asked what she intends to become, she said that she wants to give herself more time before deciding as she is yet so young.
Mother and daughter leave for the US on July 10 and so far they have not received all of the required funding, but said that they are “almost there.”
