Youth supporting youth! Church donates to local athletics
This was very evident at the Abraham Leonard Community Centre in Carrot Bay last evening, August 11, 2013 when the youth arm of the Tower of Faith Church, which is located in the First District, donated an undisclosed sum of cash to the British Virgin Islands Athletics Association (BVIAA). The monies were raised by a number of fund raising exercises done by the church's youth arm.
The presentation was made to Vice-President of the BVIAA, Mr Steve Augustine in the presence of First District Representative, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie.
The Tower of Faith Church falls under the leadership of Pastor Frankie Rathanum through whom the request was made by Hon. Fahie at a recent youth camp held in the First District. Speaking with Virgin Islands News Online about the initiative and other works of the church's youth arm, Pastor Rathanum said the youth group has always been involved in community works. He said they have been active in the production of underwater tags which are place on reefs where the Lion Fish is spotted as well as their collaboration with the West End Connection Group.
"That is a very active group in the West and the youth of our church have been collaborating with them in community activities, including clean-up exercises," said Pastor Rathanum. He said the donation to the BVIAA is not an isolated one as they donate to any just cause where and whenever the need arises in the community. "The youths are very active in their fund raising activities and they donate to various things," he added.
Hon Fahie said he would continue to work with members and organisations, religious or otherwise, to keep the community as a bonded family as it is very important that they work together as a community to raise their children.
Meanwhile, the BVIAA has been on the receiving end before in the First District thanks to a fund raising initiative spearheaded by Hon. Fahie and team.
More than forty First District youths recently participated in a Basket Ball camp that not only taught the skills of the game but the skills and discipline needed for everyday living.
The summer camp was successful in raising in excess of $1,200 which was donated to the BVIAA to help its team currently at the IAAF World Championships in Russia. Hon Fahie said the youths learnt the importance of community spirit and national pride with the project.
Following the camp, there were exhibition games at the West End Basketball Court. In one of the games, the Over 40 West End team defeated their Sea Cows Bay counterparts. The West End side included a fit looking Hon. Fahie and Steve Augustine.
Mr Augustine told Virgin Islands News Online during one of his time-outs on the bench that the BVIAA was very grateful to Hon. Fahie for arranging the basketball camp to assist athletics. “I think it is a very good cause. We have seen the performances of our athletes of recent with the World Youth Championships and we are simply trying to build capacity as far as to better support athletes in their upcoming participation and travels...”
