ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) has said the work of social workers does not go unnoticed as it contributes positively to the Virgin Islands (VI).

March is being observed as Social Workers Month under the theme ‘Social Workers: Uplift. Defend. Transform’.

“As Minister for Health and Social Development, I recognise the essential roles social workers play in advancing social justice, strengthening families and promoting equitable access to services. Their work directly contributes to safer communities, healthier households and more resilient citizens,” Hon Wheatley said on March 16, 2026.

The ministry, he continued, remains committed to supporting the professional growth of social workers, enhancing service delivery systems and ensuring that they are equipped with the resources necessary to carry out their duties effectively.

A shared responsibility

Hon Wheatley also said Social Workers Month serves as a reminder that social work is a shared responsibility.

While social workers lead critical interventions and programmes, building a caring society requires collaboration among government agencies, community organisations, families and citizens, the minister explained.

“Together we must continue to strengthen a framework that ensures every individual feels supported, protected and valued.”

To the social workers, he said, “Your commitment does not go unnoticed, your compassion makes a difference, your service strengthens our territory…we thank you for the vital role you play in shaping a more just and caring Virgin Islands.”

Dedication & integrity in service despite challenges

Social work, the minister added, is a vocation that demands resilience, empathy, sound judgement and courage, as they engage with individuals and families navigating some of life’s most difficult circumstances daily.

“The responsibilities entrusted to social workers are complex and often emotionally demanding. They must balance care with accountability, urgency with sensitivity and compassion with professional objectivity. Yet despite these challenges, they continue to demonstrate dedication and integrity in their service to our community.”

The month of activities in observance of Social Workers Month include Testimonial Tuesday (March 10), Thankful Thursday (March 12), Working with Wellness (March 17 & 18), Super Hero Dress Up Day (March 20), Mindful Hike (March 23), Acts of Kindness Day (March 25), Pearls, Sneakers and Jeans Day with Games (March 27), and Give Back Tuesday (March 31).
