'You failed that test' as Leader of the Opposition 'spectacularly'- Hon Walwyn told

- Reporter takes Hon Myron V. Walwyn to task over failed Motion of No Confidence against the government
The eyes of Leader of the Opposition Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6) appeared to nearly pop out of their sockets when he was told at an Opposition Press Conference on August 14, 2025, that the recent failed Motion of No Confidence against Premier Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) and the Government of the Virgin Islands also represented a failure on his part as Leader of the Opposition. Photo: Facebook

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The eyes of Leader of the Opposition Hon Myron V.

The one-man-led Motion of No Confidence was introduced to the House of Assembly (HoA) by Hon Walwyn during the Continuation of the Seventh Sitting of the Second Session of the Fifth House of Assembly on July 31, 2025.

However, only two Opposition Members were present at the time the motion was being debated: Hon Walwyn and former Opposition Leader Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton (AL). At the time of the vote on the motion, Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) had arrived and only he and Hon Walwayn voted for the motion. Hon Skelton abstained while Hons Marlon A. Penn (R8) and Stacy R. Mather (AL) were absent.

“You have been pushing for this Vote of No Confidence since September, after you took over [as Opposition Leader] in May, and you have been pursuing that. This is the first real test of your leadership, and you failed that test spectacularly, didn’t you?” BVI Beacon’s Business Reporter Shaun Connolly told Hon Walwyn.

With a hard stare, Hon Walwyn then asked the reporter why he said he failed that test spectacularly.

Mr Connolly replied, “Well, should we go for it? It’s difficult to see how it could have actually gone much worse for you,” adding that only Hon Skelton was there and he abstained. “Could it have gone much worse?”

Hon Walwyn makes excuses for absent Opposition members

Hon Walwyn then sought to make excuses for the members' absence for the Vote of No Confidence, saying HoA Members can never really know how long sittings can go on for, and when exactly items on the Order Paper would be dealt with.

The Opposition Leader then rejected the notion that the Vote of No Confidence motion was a failure for the Opposition.

In defending the view that the vote was not a failure, Hon Walwyn said: "A vote of no confidence is not about majority. That's not what it's about. We entered the vote of no confidence fully aware that we would not win."

He added, "That was not the objective. A vote of no confidence serves different purposes. While winning might be the most notable outcome, the key is to articulate the public's concerns because what was written in that Vote of No Confidence reflects exactly what affects every citizen in this country."

He further stated, "In articulating those concerns, sometimes a solo can be just as effective as a choir. I was a solo, and I communicated effectively, voicing the issues that are on the minds of the people. The government heard those concerns, and although they did not engage in a debate, those concerns must weigh heavily on their minds. Therefore, I believe the vote of no confidence was quite successful, as it conveyed the thoughts of the citizens."

Hon Walwyn a one-man show?

Meanwhile, Hon Penn and Hon Skelton, who Honourable Walwyn staged a coup against and wrestled the Leader of the Opposition title from, were not present at the Opposition Press Conference.

This has been interpreted by many as a clear sign that the Opposition remains divided under Hon Walwyn and that, aside from the optics, he may very well be a one-man show.

That's the same thing they said when Andrew brought the motion, and Julian did not vote for it, it don't need more than one to spread the message. Rosa Parks stood alone, and we all saw what happened after.

How can he be a one man show on the sentiments of the people? Instead your anology is correct in a different perspective that the view he elaborated on in the HOA is from one people, the BVI people, and they can't fail, they have the pen at election time to make that "X.

Evil never prevail.. psalm 10:1-11 . MW needs to stop doing things out of vengeance and malice. You knew that motion was going to fail yet you went through with it and like the reporter said, “ failed spectacularly “. Sometimes it’s ok to push pause and not follow through because of your hot headed temper and self gratification.

We can't see beyond the messenger in order to hear the message, that is major failure.

Thats actually an excellent answer Hon Walwyn. The fact is the vote of no confidence could only succeed if there is buy in from members of the VIP government and that is unlikely at this stage. Too many members of the VIP majority getting fat off the nonsense - literally and figuratively. At least he followed the correct procedural steps, unlike his predecessor. Hon Skelton however in abstaining shows a high level of disinterest in the affairs of the people of the Territory.

The optics of a failed motion, especially one backed by only two votes and marred by absences, can easily be weaponized in political commentary. But substance outweighs scoreboard when the intent is to amplify public grievances and test institutional accountability.
The motion was never expected to pass. Its purpose was to articulate the concerns of the citizenry, concerns that remain unresolved and unaddressed. Motions of no confidence, even when procedurally doomed, serve vital democratic functions:
    • Catalysts for public debate, forcing issues into the national spotlight
    • Markers of dissent, especially when formal channels are gridlocked or muted
    • Documentation of opposition, preserving a record of resistance for future reckoning
The critique that the motion failed may be politically effective, but it sidesteps the content entirely. If the issues raised such as governance lapses, economic strain, erosion of public trust are valid, then the messenger’s solitude does not invalidate the message.
Motions like these are tools of record not just tactical plays. And when used to document dissent, they carry weight even when numerically defeated.
The Honourable Leader of the Opposition is by no means a failure. He stood, he spoke, and he inscribed the concerns of the people into the parliamentary record. That alone is a success worth defending.

Your comment has intelligently assessed Hon. Walwyn's move, and it hits the nail on the head of his true intention. Of course he was aware beforehand that his motion could not pass, but his intent was met. His intent was to bring awareness to the people of the country the magnitude of various issues affecting the country and also on the poor performance of the Government.

Kudos to Hon. Walwyn. He is not a fool!

yea i agree myron for premier. he is not a failure he did what the intent was to speak the greviances of the people and he did just that. those lame followers on the government side would never agree with the points brought even though they know the concerns are correct they are blind, dont want to offend their leader and are FEARFUL But my things is if you are going to refute something stick to the points stop attacking the person and his character those are cheap outdated tactics. The energy people putting into discrediting Myron is the same energy that is going to fuel his win next election... energy flows where attention goes... you got this Hon Walwyn am a big supporter

If that failed motion was orchestrated by Skelton or Penn, we would hear how less and incompetent they were by all the MVW fans. It was not a politically astute move. Politically grandstanding and not accomplishing much but fodder for his base. How did that help or change anything? What it did was highlight MVW's inability to lead a unifed team with a unified agenda. Which is what he needs to prove to the general population. How would he lead and who will he lead? He and his base are on a tangent about being right and capable and yada yada yada, which shows that they are missing the target
