PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- Teachers, as well as Principals and education administrators, in the [British] Virgin Islands have been told that if the Virgin Islands is to move full S.T.E.A.M. ahead in education they must change their perspective, and this must be demonstrated in how they conduct themselves as professionals.

This hard talk was given by Registrar and Chief Administrative Officer of University of the West Indies (UWI) Dr Maurice D. Smith, who was the keynote speaker at the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Professional Development Day at Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) on Monday, August 28, 2023.

“You definitely need to have the proper perspective. When you take education and put it under a microscope, it is not so much the knowledge you impart to students. It is not so much what you give to them. It is your ability to reach into the lives, into the minds of those students and pull out what hidden potential is there.”

Dr Smith said in order to do this, teachers must be role models, be humble, and respectful, and demonstrate they are also educated. He added that there are persons with degrees upon degrees and yet they are no help to the education process.

Dress the part!

“If you are going to move full STEAM ahead you have got to have the proper perspective. If you are going to teach you have to dress the part. You can’t go to the classroom looking sexy, forgive me…There was a time when we as Caribbean people understood that undergarments were undergarments. These are the days when there is nothing left to the imagination. You can’t be a teacher and not be appropriately attired. Am I getting myself in trouble already?

“When you get to school everything must be in its rightful place, nothing pointing, nothing leading. You must have the proper perspective. You must understand there is a line of demarcation between the teacher the adult and the child in the classroom.”

Education transforms!

Dr Smith continued that he administers about 15 graduation ceremonies for about 9000 children each year, and he has said to his people he is quickly approaching the day where he is going to get up and walk off the stage, “because I refuse to sit on a platform administering ceremonies and you have people stepping up for first class honours degree and I can see their underwear, that is not what education is about.

“Education transforms what you know. Education transforms how you think. Education transforms how you dress, how you carry yourself, how you walk, how you speak, how you interact with other people. The more educated you are the more humble you are. The more educated you are is the better you are able to connect with other people,” Dr Smith stated.

Other persons giving remarks at the Professional Development Day were Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL) and Acting Chief Education Officer Orlandette R. Crabbe.

@Hmmm the club/ bar / jam owners are all the money. Door money, bar money. Your comment is a hurtful comment because you know you always see in active students certain places. But when the adults are drunk or high it doesn’t matter it’s just one big fete.

All the government system is a brainwashing. Who's making these sexy clothes from the beginning of time? Whos teaching you about these styles? Who's running your life because it's not you or your parents? Who tell you your child have to go to a stranger at day care when it's three months so you can go to work? Who tells your mother she has to pay rent and bills to survive? Who tells your mother to go to work at 60 years old when she doesn't want to because she have to much pain but if she doesn't she wouldn't get paid? Who tells you you can fly a plane without a licence. When you realise you are born into a planned life from birth then stay sleep

The more educated you are the more humble you are.

Unfortunately, that is not the case for some of us. Sadly the real victims of it all is the poor public school child and or children who does not have a parent or guardian to advocate for them.

Mr. Smith is 100% correct. All of the teachers should have common sense in how to dress for work. Growing up, we never saw a teacher wearing what looked like underwear or provocative clothing, male or female. Business attire at all times should be worn while teaching, PERIOD! Dressing like you are going to the club is UNACCEPTABLE and they should be made to go home and finish dressing if they show up inappropriately dressed. Case closed.

I am glad this came from the perspective of a male because if a female had said it, she would get all kinds of backlashes and verbal abuse from the public. Ladies, cover up yourselves. Real, respectable men are not interested in seeing your nakedness outside of your house

Well there is one particular teacher where all you can see is her two big helium filled booty and a crotch tattoo. I don't know how she is allowed to to teach future generations.

Most of these women even make professional wear look vulgar and unfit for the office. Why? They have no idea what their size is. Disco tight comes to mind. So, ladies, if you wear a size 6 and you are ordering a suit and can't try it, buy an 8, please as a little room is needed so that everyone of your curves and crevices are not on display in front of your boss. I see persons in the banks et cetera in uniform and they are so tight they can hardly walk. As a supervisor, I would simply order them a bigger pair of slacks, but that's me. Call me old school if you like but I am prideful and respectful.

Not only go into the classroom dressing sexy, but dress appropriately at all times. When you see how these teachers dress going to the club, these can not be the same people teaching our children. Teachers need to raise their standard all around and remember they are role models for their students. Less flesh and feathers this year. We in a serious crisis. Let's do our part.

How do you define sexy dressing. ?...Then mandate all teachers wearing uniform allocate different colours for each school..Let the head Teachers chose the colour and the style.. Give them a uniform allowance of $500.00 annually and have one standard.. Skirts and or dress Knee height or below.. # Solution

There's no need for govt to mandate how teachers dress. Some schools do take it upon themselves to do a semi uniform mostly related to a specific color for that day. Teachers need to use their discretion. They are not blind. They know when their skirts/,pants are too tight. Or when they need to cover up more of their cleavage. Teachers long ago always dressed modestly and they didn't need anyone thing them to do that. Their own sense of decency told them that.

When Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart was asked to describe his test for obscenity in 1964, he responded: "I know it when I see it." He was referring to pornography. Teachers too know what inappropriate dress is when they do it, see it, etc. If it does not feel right, then… .. .you know the answer. Dressing the part in the classroom doesn’t take away neither men or women sexuality or sex appeal. Nevertheless, teachers don’t wear uniforms but the MEC and Departments of Education should set reasonable and appropriate minimum dress standards, without being the fashion police. No one asking or expecting them to dress like Amish. How did teachers dress when teachers were in high school whether in the BVI and elsewhere? Setting minimum standards, enables the Department of Education to counsel and discipline as appropriate when the minimum standards are not being adhere to. Teachers should be role models in and out of the classroom. Let’s move full STEAM ahead. For those that may have forgotten STEAM: Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics. The Globe is in the Information Age, so we better be moving full STEAM ahead, if we don’t want to left behind in a STEAM divide.

This place is living in the past. Why do men have so much to say about what women wear? Women don't spend a fraction of their time thinking about how men dress because we have the intelligence to realise that how people clothe themselves is, quite frankly, insignificant. You want to talk about issues facing young people in this territory? How their teachers dress is not one of them. What holds them back is the lack of opportunities, the gang violence and drug trafficking... the rife misogyny of men like this.
Please men, find something more worthwhile to talk about. Women have had to put up with your unwanted opinions since the dawn of time and its boring.
