PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- Registrar and Chief Administrative Officer of University of the West Indies (UWI) Dr Maurice D. Smith, who was the keynote speaker at the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Professional Development Day at Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) on Monday, August 28, 2023, had some blunt words of encouragement for teachers ahead of the reopening of school.

Th event was held under the theme 'Moving Full S.T.E.A.M. ahead.

Dr Smith reminded the teachers that they have an important task of shaping tomorrow and they must be careful how they do that, adding that if they sow bad seeds, they will reap bad seeds.

‘You must be the example’

“Education is about helping people to become better, and may I just make an announcement, you cannot help somebody become better unless you yourself become better. You must be the example you wish for them to be,” Dr Smith said.

According to the education administrator, moving full S.T.E.A.M. ahead will require teachers to have a proper perspective, purpose objective and personal corrective.

“Be an example to them, be a model to them. Display for them what it means to be a good citizen. It’s not just about the language and the science, it’s much more than that. You are teaching them how to live. You are teaching them how to survive. You are teaching them how to exceed expectations.

A call to be ‘decent’

“You can’t be a teacher and have intimate relationship at the rum bar. Let me leave that alone.”

As teachers yelled “say it, say it,” Mr Smith continued: “You can’t be a teacher and putting all your business on social media. You can’t be a teacher and be along with your children’s parents.”

Dr Smith said he wasn’t calling teachers to be divine but to be decent.

He then challenged teachers to ask themselves what they are going to do differently this year and how they are going to improve as a professional.

As candid as he was, Dr Smith’s remarks appeared to be well received by the teachers and administrators present.

When you try to show people they need to do better you have a set of people who don’t know better encouraging them in their foolishness.

Next time you see a teacher at a bar, buy them a drink and thank them instead of behind over here looking like a watchy-watchy garbage dump security officer.

Some of these teachers wouldn’t last in the US or another country that hold teachers to a standard.

There are teachers here that parade through the place half-naked on a regular not to mention the parade/Rise and Shine Tramp/Poker Run with the entire behind and majority of breasts exposed, photo shoot pics, and the type of conversations including profanity on social media are disgraceful.

Teachers in the US and other countries may well have vibrant private lives and enjoy all sorts of pastimes. The difference is this place is so small, everyone is minding each others business!

KEY WORD “PRIVATE” not exposing themselves for the public and IF you follow the news you would know that these types of behaviours in the US and abroad are IMMEDIATELY ADDRESSED and not taken lightly.

You sound like one of the encouragers who don’t know better.

I find it pathetic that people expect teachers to be anything else than regular people outside their jobs. These minimally paid, over qualified people need respect and for their private lives to be their private lives.
We should be thankful that they are prepared to use their higher intellects to teach our children and learn less than the idiots who have set up rental businesses with their laundered money.

@ vg youth. Out of the mouths of babes. If the youngsters see this problem, where are the other educators to inform certain teachers to go home and finish dressing or they will not be allowed in the schools? I heard a student tell another student that Miss ******** pants were stuck in the crack of her butt, and the students laughed every time she got up to the board. If that is not a distraction, what is?

@Azura these teachers should dress appropriate because some of these female students would look at them, have respect for them and possibly can have sexual thoughts in their minds! No wonder some of the young men failing. Do dislike my comment because anything is possible in these last and closing days.

You don't see how medical and Dental professions carry themselves. They are more reserved. They are rather selective of their environmental attire.

Just hope that all the culprits were listening attentively for some of them spend more time on social media compared to the instructional time that they give to the students. Thank you Dr. Smith for having the courage to address these issues that long time plagued our education system. It is now left up to the officials at the MOE & the DOE to ensure these standards are improved. Teaching is a noble profession and as such it should be treated. Wishing all educators and stakeholders a productive school year.

@Good solution low-minded people like you can’t take constructive criticism. Why can’t you see that some teacher’s behavior (or perhaps your own) are not decent? It seems that you are looking for an excuse. If you think that persons children are miserable and you don’t want to teach them, well march yourself down to the Ministry of Education and resign or retire!! You are a low-minded individual who refuses to take constructive criticism. If so be the case you’re not fit to be a teacher!

Dr Smith hopes that moving full S.T.E.A.M. ahead will require teachers to have a proper perspective, purpose objective and personal corrective. It appears that educators are finally catching up with what Herbert Read advocated in his groundbreaking book "Education Through Art", first published 80 years ago.

Having a broader vision of life may promote individual good judgement in terms of what's "proper" in dress and many other things, as against adhering to hard and fast rules.

On the subject of Social Media - and online news sites fall under that category - it would be good if commentators had the courage and conviction to speak out in their own name, rather than a "nickname".

Once the teachers are involved in activities that are outside of their job, off school premises, in spaces designed only for adults, AND those activities don’t harm anyone I am for it.
Leave people alone!!!! Some of you go away to participate in WORSE things because you are ashamed of yourself! What’s in dark will always come to light! Leave the teachers!
