ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Members of Statutory Bodies across the [British] Virgin Islands selected as Gender Focal Points recently participated in a gender focal point workshop at the Office of Gender Affairs.

The workshop was held under the theme 'Building Gender Awareness/Sensitivity in the Statutory Bodies: A Workshop'.

According to the Government Information Service (GIS), the main objectives of the session were to introduce participants to basic concepts in gender and gender-related terms, increase participants’ knowledge and sharpen their skills on gender awareness and sensitivity.

The workshop was also designed to create a core group of Gender Focal Points that can advocate for gender equality in their respective statutory bodies.

The meeting was facilitated by Office of Gender Affairs Coordinator Ms Patricia Hackett.

What is Gender Equality?

Gender equality, also known as sexual equality or equality of the sexes, is the state of equal ease of access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender, including economic participation and decision-making; and the state of valuing different behaviors, aspirations and needs equally, regardless of gender.

According to the United Nations (UN), Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

It said women and girls represent half of the world’s population and therefore also half of its potential, but gender inequality persists everywhere and stagnates social progress.

Not needed. Women are already hired in jobs that they are not qualified for.

What or who determines what jobs women are qualified for? Which century are you relating from? Couldn't be the 21st century.

While this issue gender issue is important men are place at risk in the work place, and some of these women used the work place to impost there revenge’s on men, some are evolved in abusive relationship at their home and used the work place to talk to men ways they cannot talk where they live, is gender equality and equality only when it’s convenient? Should we all get the same pay but play the gender card when the work place requires us to do we can’t? A man cannot be direct with his point because of emotional unbalance

If percentages are so important then it would be prudent to point out that females make up less than half of the world's population. Therefore it would be normal to expect to see more men in positions of employment, after all, there are more men walking this earth than women. Leaving that aside though, here in the BVI I see mostly women occupying placid office jobs and the men are outside in the hot sun toiling for a living. If we want equality, lets level the playing field and get more women in the boat yards and more men in admin? Of course that's not what the women want, they just want lead everything!
