ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Minister for Communications and Works Hon. Mark Vanterpool along with his delegation of ministry and key department staff took a trip to Virgin Gorda yesterday Friday, December 9, 2011 to assess the island’s public infrastructure.

“We visited a number of ongoing projects on Virgin Gorda,” Minister Vanterpool told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

The delegation which included Acting Permanent Secretary, Arlene Smith-Thompson, Acting Director of Public Works, Dr. Drexel Glasgow, Acting Director of Water and Sewerage Bernard Grant and Sister Islands Coordinator Vincent Wheatley visited Lee Road in the Valley, North Sound Alternate Road, Gun Creek, Fire Headquarters, and Public Works Department and Water and Sewerage stations.

“What I saw left an impression that we have to move post-haste to fix some of the problems on our sister island,” Minister Vanterpool explained. “Some of our department offices require structural and internal improvements. Plans are being formulated to address these key concerns,” Hon. Vanterpool noted.

In terms of the road infrastructure, the minister said he now has a better understanding of some of the issues being experienced when it comes to roads on Virgin Gorda. One road project of major concern is the sidewalk installation on Lee Road in the Valley.

“We are also looking at installing guard rails on critical sections of the newly constructed North Sound Alternate Road as the District Representative Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal was in the process of implementing,” Minister Vanterpool disclosed.

The visit to Virgin Gorda was the first of three visits the minister is scheduled to carry out this month to assess the public infrastructure and needs on the sister islands.

A visit to Jost Van Dyke and Anegada will follow in the next few weeks.
