ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Work Permit Online System, which is expected to ease long lines and waiting times at the Department of Immigration, is expected to be launched before the end of this quarter.

This is according to Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Honourable, Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), who said the system is awaiting critical legislation to be passed.

Awaiting legislation

In a live update to the Territory on May 3, 2020, Hon Wheatley shared that the Department of Labour and Workforce Development and the Immigration Department have been “working tirelessly,” and are well advanced in their ability to launch the work permit online system prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

“At which time the departments were awaiting approval by the House of Assembly for the suite of legislation to allow for online document collection and payment transactions to take place.”

Hon Wheatley said once these legislations are passed the Department of Labour and Workforce Development would be able to launch the system for use by their clients.

System expected before end of quarter

“As Minister, I am keen on having this system put into place, as it will aid greatly, in the advancement of work permit processing, in this very critical time.

“My team continues to work closely with Januvation Solutions, consultants and creators of the system, so that we are able to launch prior to the end of this quarter,” Hon Wheatley said.

The Work Permit Online System is one aspect of the overall transformation of the public service initiative.

You could make your point without being so hateful. By the way, it is obvious you are not "from here" any respectable, and educated "native" would know how to write their identity correctly. On another note, let's just say you are, does the word "Islander" mean anything to you or is it that you feel special being covered by the "B' word? Aren't they the same people who raped these Islands? How come we are still "Virgins"

Some work permit holders earn the BVI money because they pay their tax, nhi and ssb, have to buy food at expensive prices, pay their exorbitant rent, have to buy overpriced used cars. The work permit and renewal processes are painful and seem like a punishment for wanting to come here and work and help the BVI earn money for its people. Some work permit holders will never receive a pension, cannot afford to buy a property or an apartment because they overpriced and there is 12% stamp duty tax for non belongers, and are generally not made to feel welcome - especially with some comments like these above. If we all 'went back home' then some of the businesses would have to leave as well as they wouldn't get the qualified people they need to work. So with the increase in work permit fees and the nearly 16% payroll deductions and the unfriendly atmosphere we could choose to go work elsewhere like Cayman Islands which has an efficient work permit process, is friendlier and where the rents are cheaper. The BVI would be financially worse off if we all 'went back home'.
