VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – The Ninth District Representative and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley, has announced that plans are underway to start work on the Virgin Gorda Market Square.

This project is significant for the government and is part of the Ministry of Communications and Works initiatives, with funding sourced from the economic zone project.

In a Facebook video during a tour led by Hon Wheatley, he noted that the area has been in a dilapidated state for quite some time. He mentioned that the market project has been in discussion since the 1970s and early 1980s.

Market space will serve several purposes

“What we're doing this year is reimagining the Virgin Islands market space. The market will serve several purposes: farmers will be able to showcase their produce, and others can sell clothing, books, and more. It will also bring people together for conversations,” he stated.

He added that an entertainment area would be included in the new market space, highlighting a section where performances can take place. “This area will serve as a stage where you can have performances, such as those from school bands and fungi bands,” he explained.

Hon Wheatley mentioned, “There will be vending stalls along the fence, and inside, we envision spaces for fresh fish, meats, frozen goods, and more.”

Plan to be completed by next week

He stated that plans are currently being drafted and are expected to be completed as early as next week, adding that once the plans are finalised, funding should already be available through the economic zone project, allowing construction to commence as quickly as possible.

Hon Wheatley expressed excitement about this development for the Virgin Islands, stating, “Farmers and vendors will have a dedicated space where they can come, whether for one day or every day, to showcase their products. All the farmers will be in one location.”

He estimates that the construction of this project should take no more than four to five months.

People asked for one simple thing — doctors. Instead, they got another Building plan. Then another contract structure. Both were a waste of money.”

You all elected Ralph for 30 years and had no problems but expect the current rep and government to fix everything in a year.

8 years of tax papers money was spent on family, friend, boyfriend and parties. now the 2nd half is about to the spent. People are in real need so they will take it, but the VIP government should know better, but do not fear the public knows.

Ralph is not here; the current administration is weak and doing nonsense. But since we are here, tell us how many parties Ralph had; tell us about bumping their salaries wayyyy up when they really should have bumped up the hourly rate. Tell us about paying how many consultants now? And the list goes on. Tell us; convince us. We expect lots to be done and heel of the election, surprise surprise. Just snap it

bvi leaders you all need to take a trip to our neighbouring caribbean islands and see how the market structures are done.
fisher men market should be close to the sea. each fisher man should be assigned a number for a stall in that market. there should be running water and electricity which should be in each stall.
fruit and vegetable markets for local farmers should be a bit different. each farmer should have their area to advertise their produce. these produce markets should be located in a covered structure with stalls and same way running water and electricity.

virgin gorda was once the capital of the bvi and most of the historical buildings and sights are left unattended, we have a senior citizens home still in a wooden shed next to the pwd and basically on the main road with all the noise from the traffic at night and day.
we as citizens of this small but beautiful island have allow political greed get the best of what we should have as priority.
on the camp road there is a section that is by the junction by the entrance to the resevor that is underminded by the heavy raine some years ago. this road is falling and no one seems to care . we have tourist and heave trucks driving onthis section of road every day and no one is paying attention to it until it collapes and hurt some one.
district 9 and the people of district9 that have the ability to look out for the benefit of the people and island is not doing what they were put in politics to do to better this island.
stop giving out contracts to friends and lining other ppl pockets with monies to get them out of financial situations and nothing is being done to helt our island or to advance it to the era it should be.

there are many other topics to be mensitned but lets wait for election to get closer . politicans dont remember what they promise when campaigning and trying to fool the ppl of the country.

a good politician is one that never make pronises , try to listen to thepeople of the soil, treat every one as they are the same, have your people and district best interest at heart, stop looking for kick back in finance or favor by giving government contracts to close friends and families.

Who said there wasn’t any problems. He did just like his son in law is doing right now. Election time hire people to cut bush & fill a few pit holes. BVI politics not changing, they all need a shake up.

This is as far removed from a real market square as you can get.

This is more important than the hospital? I guess an elderly person has to die outside in that tent or a baby. This is stupid. The government doesn't care for the people. The people want a real hospital and the politicians want more money to steal

In a real working environment, you produce this mess of an idea and you get fired! Simple. Hired you for so many years, you say you deserve salary increase and this is the mess you bringing to me on a Wednesday morning? You didn't just start working yesterday so there is no excuse. Time to go...

Market square? Yah can't be serious. And the clinic is functional in a tent outside? And the front of the tent is currently without ac!!!!!!!!!!! Its a shame. New building has a leak. When it rains place wet and has become mold infested? Workers are working in poor conditions. Over worked, underpaid. Hmmm

Why not think of the future and beyond. Build a decent building, one that can close after use, even secure when it has weather and other disasters. Stop wasting taxes payers dollars on these cheap foolishness. Virgin Gorda we can do better. Let us stop accepting these hand me down design of a market and suggest something better for long term. I know we can do better. Why are we not talking about the Nurse Iris O'Neal Clinic.

I am cracking up reading this headline. Vincent you are full of surprises this new year. Have you dealt with the clinic and old folks home? But now you working on a market. This gives grasping at straws. Ask VG what they want I guarantee even though a market would be welcomed, its not #1 on the list.
