ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Superintendent in charge of Territorial and Operations Divisions Dariel Robinson has pointed to a lack of policing resources as one of the issues affecting the smooth functioning in certain areas of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

He was at the time speaking at a meeting between police and residents of the First District community at West End Community Centre on May 11, 2023.

“As a result, we are seeing, on certain nights or certain days there are no officers patrolling the West End District; however, we have an officer stationed at the West End Police Station, from Monday to Friday…,” the Superintendent said.

In an effort to curb the effects, Robinson noted that the officer is there to take reports and pass them on to the Inspector at Road Town.

He established that the idea behind the patrol units is for all officers to receive the same briefing and have a better understanding of the situation within the Territory, hence the force is working on the centralisation of policing resources.

“Because, you’re having officers at every station. They’re receiving different briefing. So the station in West End, they receive a different briefing to the station in Road Town and to the East End. So, centralise all the policing resources and you brief them accordingly, so they have the same information when they’re going out to do their tasks,” he said.

'Back to the drawing board'

As such, he noted that the RVIPF is also working on restructuring community policing, as he re-emphasised the lack of resources.

“Unfortunately, resources issue, because at the same time of the restructuring we also had the CoI [Commission of Inquiry] and, according to the CoI, we needed to establish a pro-policing team which also take up a number of resources…so it further deplete the amount of officers available…

“You would be aware that lately, we have seen an increase in the serious crime within the Territory. So, based on that we also went back to the drawing board and we created a special Task Force which is temporary. This team now is responsible for night-time patrol of the Territory…and they are supposed to visit East End, West End, Road Town and make sure that the Territory is safe. Since the implementation of that unit, we have seen a decrease in serious crimes…Yes it may seem like we’re not doing enough but with the limited resources that are available to us we are trying,” Superintendent Robinson said.

Traffic violations were another major issue highlighted and discussed, including unlicenced underage cyclists operating scooters, among others.

We would not want any policemen at West End at the weekend getting in the way of the drug shipments.

A few weeks back I saw a young man riding through town with a 2 to 3-year-old child on his bike. I reported it to the police... only God knows if they did anything about it. This is pure madness!!!

The police force in BVI has more resources per capita than most other countries including the UK. This is a FACT!

One way to make money for the RVIP is for police officers to enforce the laws. Especially Illegal parking, speeding. Drivers ignore NO PARKING signs, speeding limits. Truck drivers transport building materials and various merchandise in an unsafe manner. We are a community where laws are not e forced. Hit violators in the pockets to make our community safer, and increase revenue for the treasury.

Agree with you but as we know the force is majority other Caribbean nationals. Us local and our regional officers are the ones doing the work.
The UK guys are here being paid better, have better working hours and are comfortable on their extended vacation but these UK guys will get all the praise if anything goes right.

As soon as the obvious is mentioned some pretentious people act all huh. Who in charge? Who’s in charge? Who’s in charge? Not these, those, local, regional talking heads. None of them can answer truthfully but the esthetic dampened the rage

The UK officers are being paid much higher salaries than the local & Caribbean Officers. Also, the UK Officers do not trust anyone except themselves which is clear racism starting from the Head. This is the real problem that all are afraid to say and touch because of fear of retaliation by the colonial masters.

@ let's face it, the people's purse of the BVI is NOT paying the UK police. Just like the RDA but we BVI love talking out our rear. They are more competent and get more respect than our locals and we know why. Give respect where it is first given!!

My one part is to many officers are home at nights and weekends only want do an 8 to 4 job place them on 12 hr shifts with 36 hr weeks and leave room for over time you will see every day every shift is full with workers
Then why so many police vehicles are off the road and can't be fixed which is a problem only Harbouring rats and roaches at the station
All them scooters and stuff over 6 months get the rid off that are legal the rest crush make the environment clean and healthy for living
Fix the barracks so officers can relax and stay after work a n d in some cases can be called in case of emergency if needed.

Any and everywhere there is a cadre of a certain set of ,people from a certain location that we and the rest of the World in all honesty know about, here can never be enough police and policing.
The nature of these beasts would not and cannot allow civil human interaction and behaviour. The sooner this truth is accepted and this toxic human element is neutralized by their absence, the sooner lives can be lived peacefully.

What he actually saying is that the royal virgin police force cannot afford to have more than one person at the west end police station and cant afford to do patrols in the district and nobody even there on the weekends? So the Governor pushing for this questionable police act like that's the problem when it don't even have police to do policing?
