ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- "Here in the Virgin Islands, there is a vibrant digital media ecosystem. With great power – as communicators, commentators and content creators - comes great responsibility."

This is according to Governor Daniel Pruce in a statement on World Press Freedom Day on May 1, 2025.

According to the governor, in lieu of any formal regulatory bodies it is important that editorial policies uphold truth-telling, respect and integrity.

"After all, when consumers know that a news source adheres to strict editorial guidelines, they are more likely to place their trust in that source," Governor Pruce argued.

Keeping a free media

In conclusion, Mr Pruce expressed "thank you" to local media practitioners for their work

"Without the work that journalists do to inform the public and hold states, companies and individuals to account, progress in many other areas – such as combatting corruption, upholding the rule of law, protecting the vulnerable, saving our climate and improving healthcare - would become more difficult if not impossible.

"So, let’s continue to enjoy vibrant, open discussion, let’s consider how we can keep a free media here in the Virgin Islands and reflect how we can all uphold standards for a transparent and respected press," Governor Pruce stated.

The Governor office must be abolished, No matter who the Governor is it’s the same result. Sent here to do a job , to make sure these Black People remain in subjection to the UK. Unless we get rid of this damn office of the Governor we will always be in the same predicament.
We need more leaders like the President of the United States of Africa The President of Burkina Faso. Ibrahim Traore. God Bless him.

Who holds the media accountable when the media spreads false headlines and, stories, and statements about individuals. Most are trash tabloids posing as legitimate media

In the photograph, at least two local media practitioners (like them or loath them) appear to be conspicuous by their absence. Or is Governor Pruce considering media in a narrow and outdated meaning of the word?
